Trouble with Nvidia G07 Drivers: Black Screen after Boot Manager

Since I have started my Linux journey almost a year ago, there has been a persistent problem, and that’s the Nvidia drivers. I have had problems with them multiple times (see my past posts 1, 2, and 3), and yet everytime I seem to have solved the solution, it seems to come back within a few weeks, and has persisted throughout my journey and multiple fresh reinstalls.

I’m posting again to hopefully find some long-term resolution or explanation for why my computer has troubles with the Nvidia driver. This is similar to my last issue with Nvidia, wherein after the boot manager I just get a black screen where the login manager used to be. nomodeset sometimes bypasses this, or other times fails to probe my AMD integrated graphics with probe with driver amdgpu failed with error -22. It is problem inconsistent, as there is like a 20% chance I boot normally, no Nvidia problems at all, before going back to the black screen issue next time I boot. I have tried:

  1. Rolling Back to a previous Snapshot
  2. Force reinstalling the main kmp drivers
  3. Uninstalling all Nvidia packages, then reinstalling them the next time I booted.

Here is all the information I can provide about my laptop, based off of previous times I have experienced this issue.

Why would you expect the Nvidia driver it to work when it’s built for the 7.1.3 kernel?

You need to boot the system from the correct kernel…

And if you want to use the longterm kernel, you have to install the correct longterm kernel kmp package nvidia-open-driver-G07-signed-kmp-longterm.

Unfortunately, that did not solve the black screen issue, and if possible, I would like to stick to the default kernel (currently 7.0.12 for me).

The open driver is built to match the kernel what ever that may be. Or switch to the cuda repository and it will build the open driver as required for the kernel.

What ever way you go, you need to be running the open driver AND G07 type or greater for that GPU.

Some of them are listed multiple times. Does that just mean that multiple repositories I added have them, or do I actually have duplicate packages installed (like two kernel-firmware-nvidia’s)?

@ExesCarnival0891 No same packages and installed once. Yes, since available in multiple repositories, thats why the show up.

You really need to show zypper lr -d to show the URL’s they point too.

This is not even the longterm kernel. This system seems quite messed up. You have the Nvidia kernel modules for the latest kernel 7.1.3 installed but boot from kernel 7.0.12.
This can’t work.

Ok so around a week had passed. I reinstalled the nvidia drivers again, and they seem to be behaving more often that previously. Perhaps it may be some error in previous installations.

I have to apologize on a lack of knowledge on my part. In the week since I responded, learned how to login and start a KDE Plasma Wayland session from the aforementioned black screen/terminal. I switched to TTY3 (CTRL + ALT + F3) then manually logged into my user. After logging in I ran startplasma-wayland to enter the Wayland version of KDE Plasma (my desktop environment).

I was busy, and overly irritated at the issue at this time. I neglected to mention that the workaround I had at that time was booting from an older kernel/snapshot just to make sure I can still work on my computer. I should’ve been more clearheaded at the time, my apologies. Trying to boot with kernel 7.1.3 is leading to the black screen issue. However I did workaround it.

I guess it’s no longer that big of an issue? I haven’t replied in so long because of a combination of wanting to see how far I can get to fixing the issue on my own before begging for help again, and how much more stable it has become? The login screen pops up now more often than not nowadays, and I already know the work around. However, the issue is still common enough to be noticed, and there has been periods in the past where I just consistently get a black screen after boot.

When the login screen doesn’t popup, what does

sudo journalctl -b -0 -e

show?

The glitch did not happen for me in the past couple of days surprisingly enough. Though is there anything I should be specifically looking for? I could paste the whole thing but due to the character limit on the forum it would be split into multiple replies. Also I can’t just upload a txt file of it.
