Seems like in the Tumbleweed repo oss ffmpeg-8-mini-libs is just available in version 8.0.1, while in Packman the packages ffmpeg-8 libavcodec62 libavdevice62 libavfilter11 libavformat62 libavutil60 libswresample6 libswscale9 got updated to version 8.1.

For now I picked ā€œkeep obsolete [package}-8.0.1ā€ for the affected Packman packages and hope that ffmpeg-8-mini-libs gets updated in the next days.

After solving the conflicts the rest of the update (the packages from the official repos) went through.

I would delete this one, you do not need it:
zypper rm ffmpeg-8-mini-libs

After deleting:

zypper clean -a && zypper ref && zypper dup

I do not have installed ffmpeg-8-mini-libs. I have installed ffmpeg-8 only.
I canā€™t remove it.

I canā€™t do it.
When I choose Solution 3: keep obsolete libavutil60-8.0.1-1699.4.pm.104.x86_64
nothing happens.
I can pnly choose c as cancel in terminal.

To me it seems it will probably get resolved once the required packages get updated in the repos. So, most likely just waiting some time will resolve it.

Btw. there is another thread about that: DUP Issue TW - nothing provides 'this-is-only-for-build-envs'

Yeah, had to go down the list of updates in YAST and install this and not that for a few minutes.

When there are too many dependencies to resolve to make a dup, better to wait a few daysā€¦ the doctor said that you are not forced to update

Basically the problem is that Packman already provides ffmpeg 8.1 while Tumbleweed repos are still on ffmpeg 8.0 (8.1 is in the pipeline for the first snapshot that is able to clear OpenQA and reach the repos).
So please consider if you really need ffmpeg from Packman and if so wait for the next snapshot of Tumbleweed so everything will be in sync again.
This is a quite usual snag when using third party repos that are not gated by OpenQA.

I tried disabling Packman Repos & then doing another DUP but then got about 27 issues rather than the original 7. So I didnā€™t proceed & switched them back on & decided to wait for it to resolve. Or maybe thereā€™s a better way to migrate from Packman as Iā€™m no expert?

Several software products in the video stack are dynamically linked with ffmpeg, but likely need small-scale changes to run video ā€˜stuffā€™ correctly with the new 8.1 version.

And so, when you run ā€˜zypper dupā€™ with the possibility of upgrading all the packman packages to 8.1, it wants to add in the Opensuse 8.0.1 ā€˜miniā€™ library to assure that an 8.0.1 version is still present.

At this time, if you feel a need to stay with Packman because you need to use some of the newer and better codecs which were excluded from the Opensuse ā€˜miniā€™ library because of possible legal risks, you can click through the resolver options concerning the duplicated codecs to ā€˜keep the obsoleteā€™ packman package in each case. Your packman will stay on 8.0.1, but with all the ā€œbadā€ and ā€œuglyā€ codecs still available.

Or, if you anticipate running multiple dist upgades before it the linked pacjkages get fixed and tested in QA, you can add locks on the packman 8.0.1 packages to spend less time typing with command-line zypperā€™s seven or eight 'resolver 'complaints.

The choice I would NOT make, myself, is allowing installation of the smaller Opensuse 8.0.1 ā€œminiā€ package to link with all the Opensuse graphics packages. (As you saw, that would provoke about 27 ā€œissuesā€ instead of just seven ā€œissuesā€ where can keep your ā€œobsoleteā€ packman versions.) You would have an 8.1 Packman version in place, but it wouldnā€™t be working with the video stack for most things.

After disabling packman, you need to do sudo zypper dup --allow-vendor-change.

The ā€œproblemsā€ zypper is showing you are packages which are changing vendors (switching from packman to openSUSE). It wants to make sure you are okay with that. The --allow-vendor-change tells it to accept all vendor changes.

I shared a workaround here for users who are only using packman for proprietary codecs. If this is the case for you as well, consider switching to the VLC repository:

I still donā€™t understand why i canā€™t install ffmpeg 8.1 if I have not installed 8.0.1-mini and I donā€™t use or need it. It seems the presence of that package causes more disturbance than benefit to the many donā€™t need it (I think actually nobody needs it, or it would be necessary to rethink how itā€™s implemented for the few that need it and not to be a burden for the many average users) .

8.0.1-mini is not causing the problem, ffmpeg 8.1 is.

You cannot install ffmpeg 8.1 because openSUSE packages are built with ffmpeg 8.0.1. Zypper is trying its best to satisfy dependencies by bringing in 8.0.1-mini, but that cannot coexist with ffmpeg 8.1 so it fails.

Even if 8.0.1-mini didnā€™t exist, the zypper dup would still generate errors because of the version mismatch. Packman is trying to force newer versions of packages before the main repository is ready for them. You have to just wait until the main repository introduces 8.1.

When the wiki warns about Packman causing issues with updates, this is what they are talking about.

@sidler_bot itā€™s simple, donā€™t use third party repositories with Tumbleweed :wink:

As explained by numerous Forum users, the need for the third party repositories is diminishing for the likes of codecs.

Users need to check what works first before adding. My suggestion is switch back to the defaults and test your setup, if something isnā€™t working, then create a post on your specific issue as to what is not working.

What Iā€™d miss if I dich packman?. Codecs, multimedia stuff is main thing for everybody (almost) in 2026.

Basically HEVC videos (AKA h265) and some Apple images (.heic files).
There might be some more coders and obscure decoders that have no widespread use outside specialized fields, that depends on your use case.

HEVC videos?. I think I didnā€™t see any video of this kind around nowadays ;DD . Then if itā€™s so important letā€™s integrate in NON-OSS repo.
A program with so many other programs depending on it shouldnā€™t be in packman.
What makes this annoying is when already 4 days passed and itā€™s affecting to so many users who are not expert enough to deal with it to allow other packages to be updated.
