Hi,
I’ve had this laptop for a few years and have never been able to hook a video projector to it to get the projector to display a slide presentation. The computer is a multi-boot, and I’ve just gone to Win11 for presentations as it works out of the box. I would like to get the video presentation to display on opensuse now, so am writing to tackle this problem.
I’m running opensuse 15.6 on this laptop with the following:
KDE Plasma version 5.27.11
KDE Frameworks Version 5.115.0
QT Version 5.15.12
Kernel Version 6.4.0-150600.23.65-default (64bit)
Graphics Platform X11
To provide a description of the display at present, the video projector will display the default desktop wallpaper that is displayed when opensuse is first installed, but not the walpaper that shows on my desktop. Once I try to load a video presentation, the video projector will only display the default desktop wallpaper, and not the video slide presentation that is displayed on my laptop screen.
Not sure where to go from here, so I’m requesting help.
Mark
Yes, but, there’s only one Screen and, only one Monitor mentioned in the inxi Graphics section.
BTW – “inxi -xxx --graphics” has sufficient information for this issue …
Can you please inspect ‘/var/log/Xorg.0.log’?
Items such as the following are needed (please ignore the “AMDGPU” – I prefer AMD hardware … ) –
[ 37.405] (II) AMDGPU(0): Output DisplayPort-0 disconnected
[ 37.405] (II) AMDGPU(0): Output HDMI-A-0 connected
Please check your entries in the following files located in ‘/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/’ –
50-device.conf
50-monitor.conf
50-screen.conf
Please note the comments at the top of each of these files referring to multiple device/monitor/screen sections …
Back to KDE Plasma –
In the KDE Plasma “System Settings” application → section “Hardware” → topic “Display and Monitor” –
Check that, not only the default Monitor and Screen have been detected by KDE Plasma but also, the Video Projector you’ve connected somehow …
The video projector is connected via an HDMI cable to the laptop.
In the KDE Plasma “System Settings” application → section “Hardware” → topic “Display and Monitor
It appears that only the laptop screen is detected, the HDMI device is not detected.
I installed a backported kernel as per the instructions to installnewerkernel. The kernel installed but wouldn’t load on reboot after installation. I removed the backported kernel and deactivated the backport repo. Then I installed one version older kernel than the kernel default that was already installed, as a second kernel for backup.
After I had tried to boot on the backported kernel, I rebooted and booted with the kernel-default that was already installed before the newer backported kernel installation. I don’t know why, but now the video projector projects the desktop, but at the wrong scale. Only an enlarged portion of the entire laptop screen is displayed on the projection screen by the video projector. I went to settings> display and monitor, and the video projector (hdmi1) is not detected. I can’t reduce the scale of the projected screen in order to display the correct scale of projection, so that the entire laptop screen is displayed.
It appears that the i915 driver for the Xe graphics is correct.
Show us the output from xrandr with projector attached. BTW, KDE Plasma 6 generally provides a much better desktop experience than KDE 5.27.11. Many bug fixes and improvements since that version, (including multi-display support).
The scaling ability differs between Plasma X11 and Wayland. On X11, only global fractional scaling is supported IIRC. Plasma Wayland supports per-screen fractional scaling (e.g. laptop at 150%, projector at 100%), and tends to work more cleanly, without the blurriness. I’m not sure what else can be done here with respect to your present graphical environment.

KDE plasma 6 installed as per above. Now the laptop screen is no longer displayed by the projector. I’m back to the default wallpaper that is installed on a new opensuse 15.6 installation, and it is in the correct scaling.
