So no nvidia driver running… suggest the nouveau driver. So what you need to do is ensure all the nvidia related packages are removed, bumblebee, bbswitch and suse-prime.

Once that’s done, force the re-install of the kernel zypper in -f kernel-default that should remove all the bumblebee and nvidia parts from inird. Then reboot and check the inxi output.

Is the intel-gpu-tools package installed? If not install and post the output from the lsgpu command.

Also disable the nvidia repository.

That “output” (using Paste) does NOT exist anymore.
Non-existent information is VERY useless to other folks in the forum.

This Reply is focused (a bit off-topic) on forum posting output options.

“Paste” is really ONLY designed to provide output that consists of very LARGE amounts of textual output. (100’s of lines+)

NOT 20-60 lines of output. For 20-60 lines of text output (and even more), Paste is NOT recommended.

And it’s extra work - you have to post code at another website, and provide the link in your Reply.
You also have to decide what the “lifetime” of the Paste is.

Certainly, 30 minutes is useless. And other time values are not any more useful.
Why? Because other folks in the future are looking for answers.
And if your Paste is gone, there is no usable information for those users.

And, let’s say the person who requested the info is in another timezone?
They come back 6 hours later, and your requested info is GONE.

Did you notice that “malcolmlewis” did not use Paste ?
For small text outputs, Paste is NOT recommended - why others do not use it.

Simply use the “Preformatted Text” option “</>” on the toolbar - much easier to use. And the output will last as long as the thread.

And be SURE to include the command executed (so folks know what you executed), and the final prompt.

The only reason for using paste is that the computer I’m pasting from is broken enough that it’s been the only way I can get the output to the reader. It’s a total hack trying to unbrick this laptop.

I even tried reinstalling TW, but it claims “out of memory” and the installer won’t run. :roll_eyes: but so far resurrection is slowly happening.

And when its on the tty only, or another machine, as the OP indicated, I’ll take something on the pastebin over a bad cell phone picture of somebodies screen, everytime.

What is claiming “Out of Memory” ?

Running the installer and selecting the Install option, the “loading initial ramdisk” message appears, followed by “…grub-memalign:548:out of memory. Press any key to continue…”

Install then seems to start up with at least 3 screens of text flashing by, then it halts, and the text color changes from light grey to white (background stays black). Says something about a kernel offset.

Sounds like your trying to re-install?

I’d suggest making sure your using the snapshot from today as this dropped python 3.11 and was a complete rebuild…

So make sure you use just the nouveau driver and also ensure you add your user to the renderer group (and possibly video). I would also ensure you add a lock to the “openSUSE-repos-Tumbleweed-NVIDIA” package… Check that libvulkan_nouveau and Mesa-dri-nouveau are installed as well as intel-gpu-tools. Likewise no bumblebee, bbswitch or suse-prime.

Check the output from inxi -GSaz as well.

OK, I made all the changes and the sytem is running.

For some reason the installer reports out of memory (see Dual boot "upgrade" from 16.0 to tumbleweed - #68 by pattim) and halts early in the process, so I won’t be reinstalling.

So the graphics and external monitor? Can you post the output from inxi -GSaz as there maybe some more configuration to do.

Hi Malcom - I hope this is good. I installed the Nouveau 3D options in YaST. I did everything else recommended (I think). I notice now that video seems to be completely nominal. A while back I had a problem that whenever I maximized a video, Plasma would crash and I would be logged-off. I sort of gave up on fixing that. That issue seems fixed now!! I also switched to a stock Plasma theme (an incompatible theme started all this with not being able to login) and more or less everything seems normal now.

So I’m curious, from the inxi output - is this just running Nouveau on the Intel chipset? I think I might try a 1st person shooter to see about the graphics speed. I kinda don’t care about power since this laptop is always plugged-in.

Yes, output all looks good :smile:

The display is being driven by the Intel GPU, openGL and Vulkan will use the Nvidia gpu, best setup you can get with that hardware (which is very similar to mine).

I would suggest seeing how wayland goes as well…

Huh, wowee!! That’s so cool. It’s a very nice laptop and I’m glad I finally got it fixed. The video issue I thought was a LEAP problem. Anyway, TW seems very nice. THANK YOU, EVERYONE! :grin:

There are some other options to explore should the need arise with setting the kwin drm device with an environment variable, but I would suggest leaving like it is for the moment. I suspect that it will survive the Leap 16.N series unless there are major changes…

Found a problem. VLC codecs as-installed seem to be a problem. Tried also MPlayer, MPV player, and smplayer. Not all mp4 files are affected. Important mp4’s recorded by zoom are. I think TW has its own h264… but I know there are a lot of options on codecs. I’m tempted to go to the VLC repo for codecs.

Firefox and Chromium seem to be able to play the affected mp4’s fairly well, but not as well as “normal.”

EDIT: It happens on both my laptops that I installed TW upon. I tried adding the VLC repo and changing to that version - no change. Only one laptop has the NVidia graphics, so that’s prolly not the issue. Here’s the stuff on the other laptop.

Is the intel-media-driver package installed on both systems?

For VLC I only use the flatpak version.

Oh, I can try that, TY - IIUC, flatpak version(s) are more or less all the same software across different distros. Like a kind of VM.
