Slowing getting the Hyprland Desktop up to speed…
Nice one malcolm. Gotta check if I can put it in one of my partitions.
I still have to figure how to install it… I need more reading probably to get it going.
@conram Hyprland?
The wireless device in the Stream was a broadcom/bluetooth device, speed was only 72Mb/s I found a compatible Intel/Bluetooth device in my junk box, speed up to 443Mb/s as it’s only a 1x1 antenna… I’m also connecting via waynergy from my Primary desktop (TW on X11).
@malcolm, I installed hyprland and it’s working here on tumbleweed. I followed the wallpaper wiki but can’t seem to make it work.
I am using the xfce4-panel from xfce 4 .20 pre
Dear Malcolm,
I’ve seen many of your interesting posts here… Since there’s no way for a personal message, I do post here, a bit OT.
Currently I use openSUSE Leap 15.6 (not Tumbleweed or Slowroll) with Xfce (not Gnome or KDE, I don’t like the both of them, I’m fine with Xfce) on X11 (not Wayland — Wayland support for Xfce is not ready yet, they are working on it).
What would you suggest me (due to the details above) when I want to use Wayland instead of X11?
Reasons for using Wayland instead of X11 in the future are Wayland is the general successor and “replacing” (some time) X11. And as a DisplayManager I run LightDM which is “light” — but not rootless. So my Xfce/X11 runs with root. I want to avoid that very much (even more than just to be future safe with Wayland instead of X11). I don’t like GDM or SDDM (instead of LightDM) because they are “heavy”.
Thank you!
@conram I see you got it to work, I use the following in ~/.config/hypr/hyprland
exec-once = waybar & swaybg -m center -i /usr/share/wallpapers/wallpaper1.png
The wallpaper I use is one I created with glChAoS.P and gets installed via Combustion.
@C7NhtpnK Hi, I would stick with what you have since it’s working for you, perhaps if you had another system to play on that is not critical you could experiment? Or perhaps your hardware setup can handle virtualization and play around in a virtual machine?
I’m running GNOME on X11 at present on my primay desktop, still a few issues with Wayland for me on Intel ARC and Nvidia with screen sleeping. Plus I use barrier to connect to wayland machines to share keyboard/mouse, no wayland type server yet.
Well, OK then. Overall, I am fine with Xfce (on X11). The only point I dislike is that LightDM (and so Xfce/X11) is NOT rootless. This discussion came up a couple years ago when there have been released version of GDM and SDDM able to run rootless. Then, it was told “You have to run X11 rootless! — Otherwise it’s not secure!”. This is what I wanted to do. I don’t know if it is an actual and significant risk. It has been the old way for decades…
@C7NhtpnK I use seatd and the tty to log in and launch Hyprland… Perhaps greetd will suffice for your needs? But you should start a new thread in the Forum
