I Just loaded 11.2 64 bit, initially the kernel was “default”, however, after I installed my Nvidia drivers it changed to desktop, I’m not sure I understand? In GRUB my screen lists it as desktop. Is “default” somewhere? Was it replaced? Things seem to be working alright in most cases although I’m having inordinate problems with “virtual Box” and Vmware server. In Vbox the kernel module won’t start, e.g.
You need to install the kernel-source to install Vbox or VMware also need gcc. Vbox is also in the repositories though I recommend you get the newest from Sun. But VMware has a broken installer for server and is a real pain to install. They don’t seem in a hurry to fix it but there is a community patch that may ease things
The default kernel that is installed is the desktop build now. Default kernel build is mostly used for servers. Slightly different optimizations. You can always install which ever kernel or kernels you wish from Yast
I think I may load the “default” kernel just to see if the problems I’m having with “Vbox” and Vmware go away? By the way the desktop kernel does seem to load much faster. Any way thanks for your response. I’ll still keep plugin a long.
Probably they will because you installed them with the default, you would need to rebuild them to the Desktop kernel for them to work
eg: as su
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
Any change of kernel requires a rebuild.
PS never got VMware to run but Vbox runs great on my machine
Well actually I installed them under the “desktop” kernel and I can’t get them on line with either kernel at the present time. I’m not sure what my next step will be but I can’t let it drop so we will see? Thanks for jumping in!
