What's going on? New install: popup/confirm windows hang!

I just installed openSUSE 11.1. When I right click on the trash icon (or in dolphin) and select “empty trash” it hangs the entire desktop/OS for about 30 seconds before displaying the confirm window’s text and button! What could be happening?

Upon further examination, this seems to be happening for ANY popup!! What could be causing this?

Hi
Beagle?, mandb running (it will start around 15 mins from first boot).

Run (or top from the CLI) the kde sysinfo thingy and look at processes
running.

Is it KDE4 or 3.5?

It’s KDE 4.1.3. I simply installed 11.2 “normally”.

What’s weird is I had OpenSUSE 11.0 running no problem before.

Running “top” I get these showing at the top right now:

X
konsole
kwin
kupdateapplet
dolphin
firefox-bin
konqueror
top
plasma
init

(What’s the sysinfo thing you’re talking about?)

Could this be caused by the display? (I mean the drivers or whatever KDE/OpenSUSE is using)

The issue is getting worse and worse. More and more windows are just hanging. I tried thuderbird but composing a new message hangs until I have to force kill it.

I just installed openSUSE 11.1

Which is it.
11.1 is my guess because you also say 4.1.3

Is it with or without effects?

Sorry. It’s 11.1 (the latest STABLE version) and without effects.

What’s weird is that “most” stuff seems to run a tad faster than it did with 11.0, but this hanging thing is crazy!

If you are in a updating / installing mood you could go to kde43
KDE 4.3.2 HowTo for 11.1 - openSUSE Forums

or try 11.2;)

WTF?! I think I may have solved the issue!

I right-clicked on the desktop, and chose to view desktop settings. Then I changed it from “Plain desktop” to the “Default Desktop Containment” and now everything seems to be running at super speed (i.e. noticeably faster than EVER before). I tried putting something in the trash and emptying it and the window popped up immeadiately.

Any idea why this might have fixed the issue?

4.1.3 was supper buggy at release. Good job.

Should i upgrade to KDE 4.2 or should I leave well enough alone?

OK, I think all these issues are somehow related as they all seem to be hangs when something graphical is occurring.

Now I’m getting a weird hang when, in Dolphin, I click and drag the “selection” box to cover a bunch of folders. It hangs for about 7 seconds every time before finally highlighting the folders/files.

(NOTE: Even clicking to highlight one file causes this hang!)

Any idea what might be causing all these issues?

It’s all a matter of choice.
I can’t recall what graphics you have and if that might be at issue

According to the “sysinfo” page in konqueror:

Vendor: Mesa Project
Model: Software Rasterizer
Driver: 2.1 Mesa 7.2

You have been around with 11.1 for a while now. Was this an issue before your recent re-install?

I found that most issues cleared up from kde4.2 on

Actually, I’ve only been on 11.1 for one day. I was on 11.0 before that.

I’m wondering if I should try KDE 4.2. I’m just afraid of what other issues might suddenly pop up and going back won’t be easy (and I’d prefer not to reinstall everything again).

On 11.0, I’m pretty sure I had KDE 4.1 as well (I seem to remember upgrading at some point).

What issues did you have cleared up by moving to 4.2?

What about 4.3?

General performance issues with Plasma, Dolphin and Desktop effects. Systray Icon corruption and icon misplacement. General limited functionality compared to predecessor kde3.

Maybe the performance issue with dolphin is there but I’m not actually using any effects or plasma.

The trash popup hanging thing happened again, so that issue’s not fixed. I could go to 4.2 but it might still happen there so I’d prefer to first try and isolate this issue with 4.1 if possible.

Any ideas as to other ways to diagnose this?

Running top in a terminal and monitoring it during freeze process may help.

I did that but didn’t notice anything unusual. I’ll try to do it again and post the results here.

This is all so frustrating as otherwise, 11.1 seems to be fantastic and faster than 11.0, it’s just the freezes.

While the issue is not occurring now, this is a list of all processes running now. Can anyone see things I should turn off?
