Strange behavior when suspending to ram/disk on 11.1

Hello guys,
This is first time I use the forum. Normally I would be able to sort out the problem just by searching but this time I feel alone.

Whenever I put my computer into suspend to either RAM or Disk, it seemed to run fine, BUT after 2 or 3 seconds the machine automagically wakes up. If that was a hibernation then it will go to GrUB menu (like a warm reboot) and wait there and I can manually turn off the machine; resume from hibernation works fine. If that was a Sleep (i.e suspend to RAM), I was left with a blank black screen where nothing responds (Ctlr-Alt-F1, Ctlr-Alt-Bkspace, w/e).

Suspend never worked for me under 11.0. I tried 11.1 and suspend worked like a charm, but for some other reasons including bluetooth and sound monopoly I don’t want 11.1 right now.

It seems like that s2ram and s2disk did something weird that wakes the machine up right after suspending it. Any idea would be appreciated.

I use PowerDevil and not powersave, and my laptop is a ThinkPad T61 runs Merom with Intel graphic.

Make sure you uninstall all powersave, thats what I had to do

That is an indication that some driver refused to suspend/hibernate.
There may be something logged in /var/log/messages.

I have the same problem. /var/log/messages gives me:

Plus the rest of my rebooting stuff. I don’t really see anything here.

blah blah blah about resuming, not enough character count for a post(<10000)

PS, I’m experiencing these problems under 11.1. It had been working fine until recently and I’m not sure what has changed.

Uhh…(bump) anyone has any idea?

Same problem here. I have switched from openSUSE 11.1 to 11.0 because I could not suspend, and mainly because problems with my graphic card (Intel 965 GM).

Then, I could once suspend to disk without problems with 11.0, But now, every time I try suspending to RAM or to disk, my laptop just resume just a second after suspending. I use kpowersave, and have tried also suspending via bash, but nothing works.

I hope someone help! :\

Ednilton.

@ednso

Make sure you don’t have PowerDevil installed. I had exactly this issue with 11.0

I have not Power Devil installed. :frowning:

So are you using kde4 or kde3?

I am using KDE 3.5.9.

Let’s isolate the problem a little and see if it user settings or perhaps a bug in powersave.

Create a new user (we can easily delete it later) yast - security and users - user management

Login with that new user.

see how it behaves - report back

Well, I did this, but it did not work.

I do not think the problem is Kpowersave, because I have tested s2ram in bash. Furthermore, I get a error with Kpowersave every time I try suspend to RAM. Maybe this is because my laptop is not in the withe list of s2ram. Although this, I can suspend my laptop with s2ram -f. I have also tried all combinations proposed in s2ram page (Suspend to RAM - openSUSE), but none helped. :frowning:

Since I use the -f switch, the laptop always suspend, but wake up just second after suspending.

If it helps, the log of error that a obtain when I try suspending to RAM with Kpowersave is:

Have you tried rolling back the kernel. I seem to recall some issues here. If you go to Software Management and search ‘kernel’. Find your installed kernel be it the default or PAE. Go to the versions tab and check the next radio button down.
Here is an example of the versions tab (not showing kernel though)
http://thumbnails14.imagebam.com/2967/8900af29662299.gif](http://www.imagebam.com/image/8900af29662299/)

If you are not sure what you are doing here, and don’t understand how certain other packages (eg: Virtual Box) are related to the kernel. Let us know and we can walk you through it.

The idea is to keep rolling back until we get one that works. Remember you need to reboot after changing the kernel.

Something else to consider:
Adding the kde3 build service repo. It provides the very latest kde3 and it has always been very stable for me in the past. From this thread I assume you are on 11.0 now - correct?
So the repo to add would be:
Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_11.0

Actually, I do nor think switching back to older versions of the kernel is a good idea, since kernel updates have many important reasons, as improve the system security and fix bugs.

Any way, many thanks for your replies, they helped a lot.

I will keep looking for a solution to my problem. Maybe I will create I new thread, since I have been discussing my problem in a other user’s thread. Although the problems seem the same, this may be a not polite thing to do. :shame:

Ednilton.

I’ve got the same problem here. My notebook is an Acer Extensa 4420, the video driver is fglrx, latest relase from ATi (2009-02-20). When I suspend to RAM and press the power button to wake it up, it does come back, but, the video is blank (not off, just blank black screen), the keyboard is locked. Tried it with opensource ati drivers (from suse repository), the same thing happens. When suspending to disk, it works flawlessly. It’s annoiyng have to hibernate before every break. :’(

How are you suspending to ram? Do you use Kpowersaver, Power Devil, or what?
Have you tried s2ram as root? Is your machine in the white list of s2ram.

If you have already tried s2ram as root, then you should take a look at
Suspend to RAM - openSUSE
This is a hint about how ATI cards should work with s2ram.

Sorry if you already tried all this above.

Ednilton.

I tried it with default gnome shutdown interface, where you choose the action (Hibernate, Suspend, Logout, Shutdown…)
