Feel free to contribute and help fix these issues

I write here, I try to write the spanish wiki. I use openSUSE distributions since 2007 and try to promote everywhere. I’m contributing just now. If all you can say about a legitimate criticism is question me, ok.

I value your contributions, like I value any. Please don’t see this as an attack. My 1st point is that forums posts are not bug reports. And we cannot expect the devs to be on all platforms where legitimate issues are posted, they live on bug reports, like it or not. Doing so would decrease their spare time and make them less productive. Knowing the complexity of our infrastructure, things like a rebrand take a lot time, where “this is still old” bug reports have proven to be effective and helpful.
2nd point is the “they” versus “we”. If we accept that schiscm, we no longer are a community IMNSHO.

But seems you don’t understand my criticism. People of Tumbleweed development decided change the Tumbleweed logo. Even when the community did make a constest to this. So they choose their favorite logo and in some moment someone said: “oh wait, this logo is similar to the Fedora logo!” so they, again, modified it.

So when they were happy with their new logo they decided change it. They do it and publish the announce: “we have changed the logo for a new one”.

I write in the spanish wiki, but even then I found it in a thread here: ÂżHay cambio de apariencia?

Well, spanish wiki goes slowly -I am the only stable contributor there-, but even in the english wiki was the previous logo. Even in the main site.

And this was because they decided do this and notify this after do it. This is not how a community must work.

First, they’d must take the logo of Logocontest. But if it dislikes, they’d must announced it: “we prefer this other logo!”. And then, they’d must announce “in the snapshot [some date] we want to add the new logo” and as a sane community, we’d make the propper changes in the marketing material.

And this is my point: they did not that because there is no guidelines or policies about do this things. We need nor only rebrand, nor only has a different organization: we need a lot of policies about how make things.

Nice Job SUSE, you sent your supporting community into verbal turmoil.

@40476 it’s all a test to see who’s awake and who’s not…

As @karlggest indicated he’s the only contributor to the Spanish wiki, but perhaps needs to understand the process of what changes where and how and more importantly by whom…

AFAIK, that’s (web site changes) likely done via PR’s which may have been submitted (?), but I suspect is delayed to the Heroes Team probably focused on the US Infrastructure move…

I like the new Tumbleweed Logo

Oh, FYI Neofetch was updated with the new logo…

Where can I read more briefly and concisely about the decision-making processes after the competition?
What did the chosen forms even mean? I haven’t seen any explanation so far. Of course I may have missed it.

By hunting down the person who changed the logo, and giving them an earful about talking to the community first

https://en.opensuse.org/Logocontest#The_Rules_of_the_Contest_are_as_follows:

The designs that are submitted will be added to a survey where the community can vote on the submitted logo designs. The final decision will be made at an openSUSE Community meeting and it may not be the highest scored design.

What is bolded, could be open to interpretation?

Wouldn’t the openSUSE area on GitHub, be an extension of the Community?

Seems something like “we ask, but if we don’t like your choices, we’ll make our own”.

Perhaps. But

anyway the result is a fail.

So the community ask for logos because

There is a desire for all the logos together to show a cohesive brand identity for openSUSE and its distributions
openSUSE to have Logos Competition - openSUSE News

And this is what we have:

Is it?

Lessons if we want:

  • Don’t ask if maybe you don’t like the answers.
  • Process about long term choices may be weak and rare.

Ultimately, there are areas that need to be addressed, and governance is one of those areas.

We have a special discussions section here wherein there are topics open for discussion about three specific areas that should move things in the right direction.

The discussions have been very light so far - but I think anyone who has concerns about long term choices (which IMO comes down to governance) should hop into that discussion and help with building proposals that help solve those issues.

But there is a discussion about branding as well (not about the branding elements, to be clear, but about what is necessary to pull off a successful rebranding of the project) - and that would also be a place to contribute ideas about process around that and help build a proposal / cost model so we can go back to SUSE as a project with both a coherent plan and an understanding of what costs need to be covered.

Everything else, in this discussion, is just (sorry to say this) bikeshedding. There is an opportunity to be involved in helping shape actual process, but an open chat thread isn’t where that’s happening.

Project Discussions - openSUSE Forums is where those discussions are taking place.

I have Tumbleweed and Slowroll installed. The logos I voted for in the contest, weren’t chosen, but I’m otherwise pleased with the selections.

Meh…

Tumbleweed logo looks WAY too much like the Fedora logo now.

Indeed, we either need to revert the logo or make a better one, kind of reminds me how GMC and Chevrolet trucks look basically the same. I mean, openSuSE (correct me if I did that wrong) should stand out, not look like its alternatives.

It is spelled openSUSE. Quite important to use correct trademarks when trying to convince others to revert a logo…

It’s not like that trademark is going to matter in foreseeable future…

It matters. It is the actual and valid trademark.Sombody who claims "that the person who changed the logo needs to be hunted down (original quote), and that SUSE intented to sent the community into turmoil should know how to spell the distribution in use.

It also shows a kind of respect towards the community and developers to use the name correctly when it already exists since 20 years…

Hi

My thoughts are (dangerous?) probably off topic, however…

I do not like the green seahorse logo that may replace the karma chameleon one.

I DO think that 8 letters in length is about the optimum for a name.

SuseLeap for instance
SuseOpen
SuseSLED

Tumbleweed I dont like cuz it has no roots, but don’t have a better 8 letter alternate.

Leap (For Really Old Geezers) Frog

In essence, I respect the OS, and will use it while I feel it suits, like W10, but have no real concept of the overall corporate project.

Nor do I believe I have any influence, however I want clear heads to prevail and maintain an excellent OS with branding that is not too far removed from the current perception.
