Oracle releases VM VirtualBox 4.2

http://www.h-online.com/imgs/43/9/1/8/2/3/7/acf3d2b2e0a6c7e7.jpeg

Oracle and the VirtualBox developers have released version 4.2 of their open source desktop virtualisation application with network and management improvements, as well as support for new platforms. The major update is the first VM VirtualBox release to officially support Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 operating system, Mac OS X 10.8 Lion and version 6.3 of Oracle Linux from the end of June, and it brings with it several new features aimed at advanced users.

A new “expert mode” has been added to wizards to make them quicker for experienced users and, for users with a large number of virtual machines (VMs), these can now be organised into categories and groups to make them easier to find. Additionally, the GUI now allows users to modify some settings while a VM is running; previously a VM needed to be shut down first. Support for automatically launching VMs at startup on Linux, Mac OS X and Solaris hosts has also been added, a very long-awaited feature.

Networking improvements include support for VLAN tagging, new bandwidth controls to limit network I/O bandwidth and the addition of support for up to 36 network cards in conjunction with an ICH9 chipset configuration; previously a maximum of eight cards were supported. The developers have also added support for dragging and dropping files from hosts to Linux guests; support for guest-to-host drag-and-drop and additional guests has yet to be implemented, but is planned for a future version.

Further information about the major update, including a full list of changes, can be found in the announcement press release and in the change log. VirtualBox 4.2 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris from the project’s site. For those new to the software, documentation, including an online and PDF versionhttp://www.h-online.com/icons/file-pdf.gif of the user manual, is provided.

Source code and binaries for VirtualBox are distributed under the terms of the GPLv2; the Extension Pack, which adds support for USB 2.0 and remote boot, can be downloaded under a Personal Use and Evaluation (PUEL) licence.

** VirtualBox 4.2 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack** All platforms

Thank You,

VirtualBox 4.2 is not treated as an upgrade to 4.1 and so when you install the new version, you will want to search for VirtualBox 4.1.x and uninstall it at the same time 4.2.0 gets installed. Then, when you run the new VM, it will still have all of your VM’s listed as before. You must install the new extension pack before you can update any of your existing VM’s. I just upgraded to 4.2 into openSUSE 12.2, taking my suggestions of removing the old version while installing the new version and everything worked out just fine on my 64 bit system under KDE.

Thank You,

It seems that the white background is hardcoded somehow in version 4.2. You can not changed it by setting the base color with qtconfig, as it used to be possible with the previous version (under non KDE desktops) . I don’t know if it is a vbox or a qt issue, since the qt color palette has changed as well (at least from what you can see in qtconfig).

This is the best I could get with 4.2. The font has to be black because you can not change the white background.

Under KDE, it previously used the normal background of the view color set. Now this setting has no effect. Unless I missed something (I might have), this interface is unusable with dark themes under KDE: white or light text on #F0F0F0 (hardcoded?) background.

http://imageshack.us/a/img853/3567/virtualbox42kdesmall.png](http://imageshack.us/a/img706/7484/virtualbox42kde.png)

I’m open to suggestions (other than “use a light theme”… or downgrade to version 4.1 ).

Check the detail settings of the color scheme. We’ve seen issues like this in libreoffice.

This one was a theme I wrote. But if you try the dark themes shipped with KDE, like “Obsidian Coast” or “Zion Reversed” , you’ll get the same problem with VirtualBox. Libreoffice sucks too with dark themes, but you can enforce GTK by exporting OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome. Then it is usable under KDE as well.

As for VirtualBox, I read somewhere that it will use the tooltip color for its base. This is not true (well, not as far as I can see/tell). But I did notice from time to time - maybe when compositing is disable - that tooltips under KDE appear in the same unreadable white text on almost white background (#ffffff on #f0f0f0). I have no explanation, but it’s the same foreground/background combination as Virtualbox. When it happens, I would normally restart KDE with compositing enable.

Anyway all I can change in VirtualBox is the text color and not the background - inside KDE in the color scheme, or outside KDE with qtconfig (4) which saves color settings in ~/.config/Trolltech.conf. But if I change the text to black in a dark theme, then everything else becomes unreadable under KDE. Under Gnome, it’s at least readable, because qtconfig affects only a few QT based but non KDE applications.

Hmmm … Have issues with opera too (white text on white background in navigation and search bar). Several applications which are QT but not KDE don’t play very well with dark themes in KDE. But the previous VirtualBox version was OK.

That bugreport seems to describe the same problem: QTBUG-13446: Many widgets use white background instead of what is set in Trolltech.conf or kdeglobals

Just over one month after VirtualBox 4.2 arrived, Oracle has released the second update to its open source desktop virtualisation system, which should improve its overall stability and fix various regressions. Version 4.2.4 of VirtualBox includes fixes for the recent Linux 3.7-rc1 kernel (both for Linux hosts and guests) and addresses a problem that stopped virtual machines (VMs) from booting under Mac OS X 10.8.2.

Guest Additions for Linux now include support for X Server 1.13 and correct a problem that caused X Server to hang when restarted with old guests. VirtualBox’s GUI has been updated to restore missing tooltip functionality and address a bug that, when first creating a VM, prevented users from changing settings. Other changes include updates to Windows Guest Additions to correct a screen resize issue, and fixes for Solaris hosts. Several bugs that caused the application to crash were also fixed.

A full list of updates and fixes can be found in the change log. Version 4.2.2 of VirtualBox supports Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris hosts, and can be downloaded from the project’s site. Source code and binaries for VirtualBox are distributed under the terms of the GPLv2; the Extension Pack, which adds support for USB 2.0 and remote boot, can be downloaded under a Personal Use and Evaluation (PUEL) licence.

Thank You,

IMO, it’s unlikely that the interface will be usable with dark themes under KDE any time soon. One can use it under other desktops though - while still using a dark theme under KDE - with a little trick, that also applies to other non KDE QT4 applications. I used something similar in the past for Opera, which menus just became unreadable under Gnome after KDE had been started. Indeed while initializing, KDE overwrites ~/.config/Trolltech.conf with settings from the currently used color theme, unless there is a way I don’t know to prevent this from happening - it will certainly not be “Apply colors to non-KDE4 applications”. This option applies to GTK apps under KDE, and it’s a matter of taste whether it should be ckecked or not. The consequence of KDE overwriting user settings in ~/.config/Trolltech.conf is illustraded by the picture in post #4. It is not fixed in the latest version ( 4.2-4.2.4_81684).

To have a readable interface under other desktops without touching your KDE dark theme, configure qt4 color palette - outside of KDE - with qtconfig. qtconfig is included in package libqt4-x11. I don’t know if this package is installed by default. Your configuration will be saved in the file ~/.config/Trolltech.conf. Make a copy of this file in the same directory. For the script below to work, the name of the new file has to start with the word “Trolltech”, for example “Trolltech-vbox.conf”

$ cp ~/.config/Trolltech.conf ~/.config/Trolltech-vbox.conf

Put the following script in the directory ~/.kde4/shutdown - create this directory if it doesn’t already exist:

#!/bin/sh

trolltech_alt=`find $HOME/.config -maxdepth 1 -mindepth 1 -name "Trolltech?*.conf" | head -1`
if  "$trolltech_alt" ]; then
        cp -v $trolltech_alt $HOME/.config/Trolltech.conf
fi

call the script “qt4conf-restore.sh” and make it executable

$ chmod 755 ~/.kde4/shutdown/qt4conf-restore.sh

Here’s an example of Trolltech-vbox.conf which works - outside of KDE!. The almost white background color (#f0f0f0) can not be changed (that’s precisely the bug in VirtualBox 4.2).

Oracle has released a maintenance update to its open source VirtualBox virtualisation package that fixes several crashing problems, compilation problems with the rc0 release of the 3.9 version of the Linux kernel, and incompatibilities of virtual hard disk “differencing” images with Microsoft’s Hyper-V hypervisor. VirtualBox 4.2.10, which was released less than a month after the last maintenance release (4.2.8), also fixes a bug on Mac OS X where the virtualised host was not able to detect the correct keyboard type over an SSH-forwarded X11 connection.

Among the crashing issues fixed in the new version is a crash with multi-monitor setups on Mac OS X, crashes when the host computer was waking up from hibernation, and problems with VBoxService crashing on Linux hosts when libdbus was not available. Multimedia redirection on Windows hosts can now also be upgraded correctly again. More details of all bug fixes in this release are available in the VirtualBox change log.

VirtualBox 4.2.10 is available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris from the project’s site; builds for specific Linux distributions are also available and include Ubuntu (12.10, 12.04LTS, 11.10, 11.04, 10.4 and 8.04), Debian 7 and 6, openSUSE 11.4, 12.1 and 12.2, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 and 10, Fedora 18, 17 and 16, Mandriva 2011.0, 2010.0 and 2010.1, and Oracle Linux/Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, 5 and 4. Downloads for older builds are also provided. VirtualBox binaries from version 4.0 onwards are licensed under the GPL; source code is available from the downloads page.

VirtualBox 4.2.12 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack All supported platforms

Thank You,

Quick question: Is there a HOW-TO to install VirtualBox and make is start in boot?

That’s what I’m trying to do right now without any luck…

sorry if it’s the wrong place to do this kind on question.:frowning:

There is a Article on installing VirtualBox https://forums.opensuse.org/content/59-how-install-virtualbox-opensuse-11-4-12-1-tumbleweed.html, basically, use the most recent version links here and download the VirtuaBox Application (32 or 64 bit) and the common Extensions pack. Then read through the article. You can use a terminal command like “VirtualBox startvm VmName” to start a VM session. You could create a BASH script with this command and set it to auto load if you wanted to do so. First, get VirtualBox installed and setup, next create a VM that works as you wish, next formulate a terminal command that works, next decide how you want to auto load this command of which there is more than one way to do.

Thank You,
