i just installed Suse 11.1 and i was hoping that the sound problem was solved by now, but unfortunatly its not.
SO please help me, i got an Acer Aspire 6920G with a ALC889 Sound Card.
Please give me easy step by step what to do, to get sound!

Did you do what is mentioned here: Restricted Formats/11.1 - openSUSE-Community?
When yes, blame yourself for not telling us 
What application(s), are you using as a criteria to state that your sound is not working?
To test if your sound is working, I recommend you try copy and pasting the following into a gnome-terminal or a kde konsole:speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twavyou should hear a lady’s voice saying “front-left”, “front-right” five times. Note Linux is case sensitive.
If that does not work, please try a shorter form version:speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twavIf you hear sound (ie if you hear the lady’s voice), then please post here, let us know this fact, and explain more as to what your sound problem might be.
If your sound still does not work with those tests, can you run a script and some commands for me to provide more information? With your PC connected to the internet copy and paste the following into a gnome-terminal or konsole:
/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh
When the script completes it will pass you a URL. Please post that URL here.
Also, please copy and paste the following into a gnome-terminal or konsole and post the output here.rpm -qa | grep alsa
rpm -qa | grep pulse
rpm -q libasound2
uname -a
cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound
Finally, are you using KDE-3.5.10 ? KDE-4.1.3 ? or Gnome ?
Based on that data, I may be able to provide a recommendation.
I don’t mean to hijack the thread (If I should create a new thread let me know), but I have a similar issue. I don’t hear the sound effects of various desktop actions in KDE4.
When I ran this command:
speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav
I heard “front left” and “front right”
any ideas why I wouldn’t hear the desktop sound effects?

I also had sound problems in KDE4, but amarok and others worked. Solution: uninstalled everything related to pulseaudio >:) (except libpulse because of some dependency problems), after reboot KDE4 sounds worked and amarok also continued to work. I’m sure there is some other solution as well.
Yea, I have a similar issue. My KDE4 sounds don’t work, but flash videos have sound (haven’t tested amarok yet).
Iirc flash player uses gstreamer whereas most applications use the default sound server, which in this case is pulse audio. Amarok would work if it was using the gstreamer backend.
I haven’t installed 11.1 final, but I had been using the betas and rc on my production system and never encountered a problem with pulse audio. Strange that the issue would appear in GM.
You may be able to get the sound working if you change the priority of the sound devices under KDE system settings > Sound.
Changing the priority didn’t seem to have any effect. I just did a restart and noticed I hear part of the startup sound (it cuts off a bit early), but I don’t hear any other system notification type sounds.
I just checked, and Amarok seems to work. Is there another audio utility that would be a good test (that I could set the playback engine in)?

that will give you a URL. Please post that here. Also, what are the symptoms of your problem? No sound at all? How about if you plug in external headpones? Do you have sound there?
I don’t know if this helps with my problem, but pidgin sounds sound choppy. I went into their sound settings and it happened with both ALSA, ESD, and Automatic. If I notice anything else that I think my help narrow down the problem post.

OK here are all the infos u guys wanted, i still have no sound, im using Gnome but if its easier i can reinstall to xfce or KDE4 as its needed!

I confirm the information in your initial post that your Acer Aspire 6920 has an ALC889 on a 32-bit openSUSE-11.1 with the 2.6.27.7-9-pae kernel. Looking at your mixer I see:

I do not know anything about this make laptop, … if you switch ON Surround sound and Center, LFE, Side, does it make any difference?
I also note you do not have alsa-firmware installed. I do not know anything about the alc889, but it would not hurt for you to install alsa-firmware in case it is needed. So please, install “alsa-firmware”.
I note an openSUSE Acer6920 laptop user I helped some time back managed to get sound working on an ALC889 by an edit to their /etc/modprobe.d/sound file. http://forums.opensuse.org/hardware/laptop/392725-acer-aspire-6920-a.html?highlight=aspire+6920 I note the same for various Ubuntu users who edited their alsa-base file (which is conceptually similar to the openSUSE sound file). The edit they added in all cases was: “options snd-hda-intel model=auto”.
So please edit your /etc/modprobe.d/soudn file, such that it reads:
options snd slots=snd-hda-intel

options snd-hda-intel-model=auto
And then restart your PC and test your sound. Pay careful attention to the settings in your mixer.
If this does not work, it may be necessary to try this in KDE, or try this without pulse audio.

I was also having problems though I have recently reverted back to 11.0 which is fine.
I have an SBx00 Azalia onboard (Realtek ALC889A using hda-intel) but I also have an Maudio 2496 PCI card (snd-ice1712) and the HDMI on my Radeon 4850 graphics card.
I found that I could get the Azalia to work through yasts sound configuration but after a reboot it reverted back to the Maudio Card as the primary card.
One thing I have noticed in this thread (I may be way off though!!) is that everyone has azalia/realtek/hda-intel based sound.
Anyway I am no expert on this, just throwing my 50 pence in, just incase it can help.

OK, the hardware audio codec is a IDT 92HD71B7X on your HP-DV5 on openSUSE-11.1 with a 2.6.27.7-9-pae kernel.
If you read the above posts, you will have seen I typically ask for the users to provide a copy of their /etc/modprobe.d/sound file. You did not provide that, and it makes it harder for me to provide good support. >:( . Also, by piggy backing on someone else’s thread, it makes it very hard to sort out who has posted what, because typically users provide incomplete information, and it forces me to hunt back and forth and back and forth to figure out who posted what. Next time, PLEASE !!! its far easier for me if you start a new thread.
Anyway, I have to guess / speculate as a result … Please add the following line to the end of your /etc/modprobe.d/sound file and reboot: options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4 enable_msi=1

if it does not work try changing “hp-m4” to “dell-m4-1” restart and test. If that does not work try “dll-m4-2” and test.
Please test with the speaker test that I provided above (Now its your turn to hunt and pick and try figure out what I mean

I also had some problems, actually no sound at all, with this hardware in 11.1.
I’m on an ASUS M2A-VM HDMI motherboard with this sound chip integrated.
My uname output is as follows:

But for me it wasn’t actually the hardware that was the problem, it was me that was the problem. I run XP in VirtualBox, back in version 2.01, I believe, I had to set the sound driver to OSS in VirtualBox-XP. That changed in 2.06. But now in 11.1 and with VirtualBox 2.1 I copied a saved image of XP created in VB 2.01 and no sound in the host system! Luckily I found out to switch over to pulseaudio in VB-XP, and sound works better than ever in both the host and the guest system. So maybe someone might be helped by my error!

As I see it the sound problems are related to pulseaudio, overall if it used to work in previous versions.
Try updating all your system packages, after adding packman repository, with Yast > Install software > Packages menu > All Packages > Update if available.
This seems to install some new pulseaudio related packages that solve the autodetection of sound system problem.
Another approach is to change autodetect settings to alsa in Personal settings, Amarok, etc. If this gives you your sound back it definitelty points to pulseaudio.
For firefox, if updating packages doesn’t solve the sound, you’d need to install flash-plugin-pulseaudio.

i too have no sound after recently installing suse 11.1 KDE… i installed using the live cd 32bit and now habe no sound from all programs nor the desktop.

Thats the first I have seen that! Typically the script can be run as a regular user. Please run the script again, this time with root permissions, … iesu -c '/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh’which should update the script.
When that update is done, once again run the script, and this 3rd time it should work. Once the script runs successful, please post the output URL that it provides here.
Also, next time, please start a new thread. Its very difficult to hunt back forth on a long thread, trying to put together the pieces of the posts of one person, when many people are throwing their problem into the same thread.
