I have no sound on a Dell laptop. Fresh install of OpenSUSE-15.5 64 bit. I installed sof-firmware and alsa-ucm-conf. In Yast, the sound card does not configure. Here is relevant dmesg output.

Okay, seeing similar reports online for some related hardware. Run

sudo dmesg | egrep -i "firmware|snd|intel"

and report back with the output.

Something to try while investigating further. Try using the following boot parameter

snd-intel-dspcfg.dsp_driver=1

and report back.

BTW, what model and age is the laptop?

The error messages in dmesg have disappeared, but still no sound. Configuring sound via yast does not help.

Ok, thanks for the update. Don’t use YaST sound as it won’t help with configuration and is deprecated in any case.

Dell XPS 17 9700, bought in 2021. I had a lot of problems with sound for OpenSUSE-15.3, here is the thread: 1176200 – Audio does not work on Dell XPS 17 9700

15.4 I installed via zypper dup (no sound problems afterwards), and for 15.5 I made fresh install, and here they are, sound problems.

It might be worth testing with a newer kernel. No promises though.

Are you confident you have an appropriate firmware version installed? I haven’t looked at such for a couple of years, but previously one needed to ensure they installed an appropriate firmware version for their kernel version.

Maybe a misconfiguration between pipewire and pulseaudio.

I had als no sound when updating, I delete pipewire and wireplumber and restarted.

Maybe that helps also for you.

I missed that, although other users have have reported no issues with both enabled concurrently. I think it is a good idea to install ‘pipewire-pulseaudio’ which will provide the compatibility API and daemon, and remove pulseaudio at the same time.

Thanks, removing pulseaudio helped with bus clash messages, they have disappeared. But error messages are still there and sound is not working. Here is current dmesg output (I have cut the repeating messages at the end):

sudo dmesg |grep -i sdw

Thanks for suggestion. And how to know which version of sof-firmware to install? Is there any specific list for that?

You could do

zypper se -si sof-firmware

or

rpm -qi sof-firmware

For Leap 15.5 you’re likely to be using 2.2.4-150500.1.1 from the main OSS repo.

It is possible to update the firmware from GitHub - thesofproject/sof-bin: Firmware and topology binaries

Start by cloning the git repo with

git clone https://github.com/thesofproject/sof-bin.git

*Install the ‘git’ package first if needed

cd sof-bin

You can back up the exiting /lib/firmware/intel/sof directory first (move it as root to some other backup location) then use the following install process:

Thanks! I installed the latest version of firmware from here: Releases · thesofproject/sof-bin · GitHub According to the description, it should contain both old and new architectures. Now I have sound via bluetooth devices, but not via speakers (previously there was no sound at all).

A question. Is there a chance that fresh install of 15.6 would work? Would it be better than installing new kernel on 15.5?

Kind regards,
Oleksii
