It’s only a discussion about rebranding (the project as a whole) at this stage.
There is no voting, because Leap isn’t being considered for rename to anything. Or Tumbleweed, or any other product under the openSUSE umbrella.
This discussion is about “The openSUSE Project” not the products under the umbrella.
There will be every attempt to make the project membership completely aware of any discussions or voting that might take place.
That being said, there won’t be any voting on a “Brand Name” until a list has been put together, and vetted to make sure nobody is domain squatting that name, or is sitting on a trademark somewhere for it.
It’s going to take a while, this isn’t going to be something that gets completed in the next two weeks or anything.
I’ll be a bit clearer - I’m saying that if openSUSE has to change it’s name that “Leap Linux” would be a good name to change to ie: Leap Linux Leap:15.6. I was actually shocked to hear about the proposed name change, I voted against it the last time.
I’ll get an email for voting if it happens.
lunarix or stork, barnix. but i feel there could be so many better names lol
OpenSuSE LEAP = Quantix LEAP
OpenSuSE Tumbleweed = Quantix Roll
aint gecko linux allready exist as a “third party fork” of opensuse ?
RedHat - Fedora
So i agree i would have enjoy gecko too.
it have to sounds nice, short. Easy to say for every accents.
I’ve been using Suse (then open Suse) for 20+ years as my desktop O/S,partly because my employer was using Enterprise Suse and I wanted to be able to mock up scripts to use there, and mostly because I wanted complete control of my O/S. If one cannot use ‘SUSE’ in any way in the new name, the only name which will mean anything to current users will be Tumbleweed.
Which implies the new name contain ‘Tumbleweed’ in some manner.
My suggestions (given freely and worth every penny) are:
StableTumbleweed
SuTumbleweed
TumbleweedSt
Or, maybe Gecko, if that is allowed.
Gecko Linux is less a distro and more of an install-script for Tumbleweed and Leap.
The creator is very nice and I’m sure if asked he’d be happy to rename the project so the organisation proper can use the name.
Come to think of it, the organisation can probably name itself Gecko Linux anyway without asking for permission, but I like being polite ![]()
salamandra is perfect in my opinion, way better than leap. also its pronouncing like o’u-pen-su-se → sa-la-man-dra (4 syllables)
I’m still hoping for a two-syllable name.
Sa-la-man-dra Tum-ble-weed for a-arch-sixty-four is a quite a mouthful.
The supporting organisation doesn’t need to change name.
The same goes for the products (Leap, TW, SR, etc).
The brand, imho, should be short.
Nice to know about Gecko !
If someone ( not me ) can get in touch with him and politely ask him, just in case.
it have the two syllables. Its easy to pronounce. The relation and the distinction with Suse is there.
I haven’t followed the planned changes to the logos of the various opensuse distributions. Will the Opensuse logo remain a chameleon?
While this is true, I believe aligning the overarching project name with the governing body would be beneficial for clarity and brand unity. The key is to ensure that the rebranding supports the overall goals and strategy of both the project and the foundation ie make it obvious that the two are connected.
FWIW, I don’t think many ordinary opensSUSE users are aware of the Geeko Foundation or what it does in relation to the current openSUSE project.
Maybe a simple anagram can help :
- USES Leap / Uses Leap
- USES TB /Uses TB
- and so on
My PC USES Leap … sound good
Just drop openSUSE and uses Tumbleweed and Leap.
This topic is about the project name - the request to rebrand (not the individual distros as such).
Geckos are cute and swift, I like that direction.
“openGecko” maybe?
The only issue is that saying “Gecko” uses back of the throat consonants. It does not literally roll off the tip of your tongue like “Suse”.
“Salamander” or “Salamandra” is nicer to pronounce, but 4 syllables is a bit much.
Got it, “openLiza”?
Edit: On second thought, better not use something that could be interpret as a person’s name…
I like openSUSE, but if you must change it why not just call it “Tumbleweed”?
I just posted an issue in the main GeckoLinux github but the dev hasn’t responded to issues in years. Not sure where else might be more direct.
I’m not sure what we’re voting for, given their appears to be no list we’re choosing from…?
Regardless, i like something that has continuity with public understanding of opensuse products, and retains a sense of family across those products.
For me - something like - the following fits this bill:
Leap Stable - Opensuse Leap
Leap Rolling - Opensuse tumbleweed
Leap Slowroll - Opensuse tumbleweed (slowroll)
Leap Immutable - Opensuse Aeon/Kalpa
n.b. i can’t begin to express how daft the recent product rebranding was. as a 20yr suse user the random word-salad of names like “Ana” left me completely lost as to what opensuse product was being discussed, and I new about the change and was interested in following opensuse discussion!
It might help to read (at least) the thread before posting. As already stated several times (the last time only 4 posts above yours…), the products won’t get renamed. It is about the Project name!
