How about âLeapsâ? ⌠It is not obviously used as either a noun or a verb. âIf I try really hard, maybe I can leap aheadâ. âI finished the race a full leap ahead of Greggor.â
I am still struck by my first experience with suse ⌠I logged into a fresh install and was told to âHave a lot of funâŚâ. However re branding, renaming goes ⌠I just hope that the original spirit remains, because I have definitely had great fun over the years.
After some reading of open discussion, I came to the conclusion that the best way to describe what openSUSE holders want would be one of the following new names. These suit their requirements the best.
It is hard to understand why some new users with seemingly lack of understanding, try to be disrespectful and defaming towards a company which did never anything bad towards openSUSE. Without SUSE there wouldnât have been openSUSEâŚ
âtorvaldixâ - Having anything with âdixâ in the name sounds terrible. Other distros would call OpenSuse users âdixâ most likely. Stay away from anything with âdixâ. I get the âixâ endings are Linux/ Unix related, but sounds too dorky those names IMO.
âkowalskyâ - I first thought âWTFâ then I remembered itâs a penguin from the Madagascar movies, so I get it now. But no.
âendgameâ - OMG get me a sick bag. AwfulâŚ
âtitbirdâ - FFSâŚ
âsalamandraâ best from that list, best of a bad list.
Just go with something lizard related as thatâs the history. My two cents.
Hello everyone.
Note: I am not a new openSUSE user, just new to this forum.
I just signed up to comment on this topic.
I have been reading through the mailing lists and news on this topic a bit.
It appears to me that this request is a decision from SUSE which should be respected. It is the company that sponsors openSUSE more than what is needed for their own benefit.
The only openSUSE distribution which is (economically) useful to SUSE is Tumbleweed as part of the development and testing for their enterprise distribution(s).
Nevertheless this company is sponsoring the entire project.
If they now make a (marketing?) decision to ask the community project to rename and recommend to change the governing of the project it is not more than fair to follow this requests.
Regarding the name issue: In my opinion the renaming should be done in a way that it matches with the most likely happening changes in governing the project.
Following some news items and the mailing lists it seems to me that most likely the Geeko foundation will become âtheâ foundation that will host the openSUSE project.
This step would in my opinion also make sense for the project to be able to get sponsorship from outside SUSE.
Instead of complaining about SUSEâs request we should be thankful for their generousity and the community can indeed use this chance to become a bit more independent. Even though I think it would be great if SUSE will still be the main donor (which they most likely will be - they kind of need Tumbleweed)
This whole situation could be handled much worse by SUSE. Luckily they didnât make any Red Hat style decisions.
So, taking into concideration that the Geeko foundation will likely host the openSUSE project it makes most sense to me that the project and the foundation have the same name. IMHO itâs the only way to make it obvious to donors that they are donating to the project.
But anyways itâs all a bit hypothetical for now. I just think before renaming the project one has to think about the possible future foundation as well. I think it would be confusing for donors if a foundation that hosts a project has a completely different name.
So, the reformation of the governing and the renaming are pretty interlinked from this point of view.
That is a good read of the situation, and the spirit in which it was delivered to us via the mailinglist discussion and associated oSC 2024 talk that was also linked there.
Iâve already made my thoughts known about the âGeekoâ name in the Project Rebrand threadâŚ
