I have just completed and tried my new installation of TW using Gnome. I am finding the change too difficult to get used to as I am wasting so much time trying to learn new tools etc. so humbly I ask, how difficult will it be to revert to the KDE desktop I am used to. Can I do this without having to rebuild the OS?
sudo zypper in patterns-kde-kde
It should be fairly easy whether from zypper or from YaST Patterns to add or remove. I went the other route and installed KDE just to relearn the DE since it had been a while. KDE is a tinkerers dream on customizing but finding the exact settings whether in edit panel, settings, etc can take some time. I always install Cinnamon because it is a good environment easy to change and navigate and Gnome is my second favorite. I just used YaST to install Gnome and remove KDE only leaving the SDDM login which I prefer.
It is easy to add. But a Pattern is just a list of packages that are recommended for installation in order to get a good functionality for what the Pattern name suggests. Thus there can be packages that are also recommended by other Patterns or for a basic installation, or installed later out of interest. Thus you can not really remove the Pattern. When one would remove all the packages mentioned in a Pattern, it is very easy to remove packages that are nevertheless needed (even for daily use).
I can easily understand that Firefox is part of several Desktop Environment Patterns. Removing all packages included in such a DE Pattern would then leave you without Firefox.
Many thanks. All installed now and working as hoped.
The Gnome adventure was interesting but I found learning curve too steep with no benefits for me. The total rebuild was worth doing though. It seems I had accumulated much junk over the years and still have not worked out why I had a disk full of snapshots but hopefully all will work correctly henceforth.
Many thanks once more.
