KDE on Tumbleweed crashes

After some month w/o dup I finally did one last week and since then KDE crashes every second day. I would say while switching windows or clicking on the dock.

I can only move the mouse but no keys work. I also cannot switch to the text consoles.

I can log in remote.

killall plasmashell has no effect.

journalctl (w/o options) gives no hint.

On each crash I do a zypper dup before rebooting, up to now without effect.

My home is 8 years old. I the past legacy configs were an issue.

Any hints on how I can track down the issue?

Thanks

Any extra repos involved?

zypper lr -d

Does the problem arise for a new user? If so, the culprit is in the system, if not, in your homedir

I don’t think it is from the repos, I assume it is from KDE

There is no new user involved. How shall I check the logs for crash messages?

Thanks!

could you say if your on intel grahics? intel was ok for 2 years until maybe 2 months ago when kwin and x org started to crash every day or so, last week removed the intel driver + recent TW updates and things ‘seem’ to be much better.

Maybe you can try to change Rendering Backend in
System Settings>Display and Monitor> Compositor

I have a nvidia graphic card and since I unchecked “allow applications to block compositing” and I set to OpenGL3.1 I didnt get any crashes

I have nvidia with nuveau. I just applied the suggested settings. Hopefully it works

Thanks so far!

Yesterday I had the KDE freeze again - I was not much on the computer the last days.

I was just task switching with the dock. Up to recently I did have the KDE freeze.

My keyboard and mouse clicking is dead. So no text console but moving of the mouse pointer. I can also login by ssh from remote.

Also my krunner regularly crashes, but krunner I just need to restart.

Does anybody have a hint for logs to lock into?

I suspect old configuration. What shall I delete?

Thanks!

Fabian

Since you suspect a user configuration, try creating a new user and log in to that account. Check the stability there. Many of the config files are located in ~/.config/ (*rc files) and various others in /.local/share/.

further to my last post i also deleted the contents of ~/.cache. I have only had 1 crash in 2 weeks now rather than daily.

Mine’s been randomly freezing on screen lock for about 2 months. Then I have to log in over ssh and reboot the machine. Only happens once every couple weeks, so I’ve just been living with it, plus could be related to nVidia driver.

I could resolve my screen lock issues by disabling the energy saving.

I deleted ~/.cache and ~/.config/kde.

Thanks for the update. Good to know.

Sorry, my comment was completely misleading :frowning:

Some month ago I had crashes on screen lock as mentioned by xorbe. This issues I could solve by disabling energy saving on screen lock.

My current KDE freeze has nothing to do with screen saver and screen lock.

I’ll know next week if cleaning the cache helped for the KDE freeze.

Had a “crash” today again, the next working day. So cleaning ~/.cache did not help.

Anybody knows where I can see kde logs? It happens when I interact with the dock.

Where are the dock settings stored? I would try to delete them.

There is no such thing as KDE logs. You could use ‘journalctl’
What do you mean by ‘dock’ ?

My lower bar where I have icons for my running applications. I switch applications by clicking on the icons. Left is the “start button”, right widgets with clock, …

How is this called? Panel?

I disabled thumbnails in the panel, up to now no crash - I hope this is the workaround?!

Just for the records: no more input device freezes after disabled preview for the KDE panel after sufficient much days.

Hi,

I’m bringing this up again because I experienced exactly the same thing. I clicked on the clock on the panel and everything froze, even though the mouse pointer kept moving. I couldn’t get to the terminals and did a hard reset. Didn’t try ssh… I’ll try next time, seems like a good idea.

My journal also has no trace of this. Anything I can do to figure out what’s going on? What thumbnails did you disable and how?

Thanks!

I see I replied to this thread back in Feb with KDE freezes. Just reporting that I haven’t had any in March or April. Must’ve been an rpm update or nv driver update, just a wild guess.
