How to boot laptop with closed lid, using external monitors?

Hi All,

I have the latest Tumbleweed KDE installed on a modern lenovo laptop. I have successfully set it (via Plasma power settings) up so that when closing the lid, it just turns off the laptop’s built-in screen and I can continue working on my external monitors.

How can I set it up so that I can power on and boot the laptop with the lid closed?
Now I have to power it on, boot and then close the lid… I find this rather cumbersome…

@kabamaru3 Hi and welcome to the Forum :smile:
You should be able to override by adding a /etc/systemd/logind.conf.d/01-ignorelidswitch.conf containing;

[Login]
HandleLidSwitch=ignore

All the options available are in /usr/lib/systemd/logind.conf more info in man 5 logind.conf

Now, if you don’t want the display on at all, there is a grub option you can add…

Hi,

Check option in your BIOS. I do have a similar set-up and if I remember correctly, you can configure your preferable screen for boot.

If you want I can double check later on.

Hi @malcolmlewis ! Thanks, however I am not so new in the forum, I just had to create a totally new account, as I couldn’t login (nor reset or retrieve password) for some time with my first account…

Unfortunately, I tried your suggested solution but doesn’t work for me. Btw, my impression was that the HandleLidSwitch action was referring to ONLY when the lid is closing? I am asking, because in my case, I am not doing anything with the lid. The lid is closed and I am pressing the power key (which, when the lid is closed, doesn’t do anything). There is also no option in my UEFI settings. There was only 1 option that I disabled (“power-on when lid opens”).

I even tried the below, but it didn’t work:

[Login]
HandleLidSwitch=ignore
HandleLidSwitchExternalPower=ignore
HandleLidSwitchDocked=ignore

Any other suggestions?

@kabamaru3 this system is booting to multi-user or graphical target?

@sajon Please do double check for me!

In my UEFI settings there was only 1 option that I disabled (“power-on when lid opens”).

@malcolmlewis is this what you mean?

user@pc:~$ sudo systemctl get-default
graphical.target

@sajon I double-cheked. Ineed, I only have 1 relevant option

Flip to Boot
“lets the system automatically boot to desktop without pressing the power button”

E-h-h … how do you power on laptop with lid closed?

@arvidjaar think the Lenovos have a couple including one on the lid, I would assume if it’s connected to a dock, no need to open…

In this case it should just work. I had to jump through the hoops to force my notebook to suspend with the second monitor connected.

This is an option I had in mind. It works :slight_smile:

My lenovo yoga slim 7 pro 14IAH7 laptop has the power on/off button on the side, it is very well possible.

@arvidjaar and @malcolmlewis I am not using a docking station, only a multiport hdmi to usb3 adapter.

@sajon Nope, I don’t have such an option in my Yoga :sob:

Good. So - what happens when you power it on with the lid closed?

Nothing! The power button doesn’t do anything when the lid is closed and the laptop state is powered off…

And how, pray, it is related to openSUSE? Your vendor support channels/forums would be more logical place to ask.

Well, I thought it was something possible to solve using the OS (as other related settings are there).

Now that I’ve been looking more into it, I came to understand it might have more to do with the hardware/bios/etc.

Based on my research, I didn’t find any info that it is indeed possible. I do plan on posting on the manufacturers’ support forums.

Have you looked at the power saving options, when you close the lid and also when you have an external monitor connected?
You can look at that in system preferences, in power saving.
