Hello all ![]()
I might be one of just a few person but I was wondering when or even if there will be the new GNOME 50 available? I’m waiting for it so I can do a new clean install and testing it out (after few months of KDE).
Cheers

@Jeyh92 It’s being worked on… I suspect it’s close ![]()
Still some openQA tests to clear apparently when upgrading from Leap 15.x
Gnome 50 is already available in the Gnome:Next repo and I’m using it (if you can’t wait…)
@malcolmlewis Glad to hear that it’s not forgotten ![]()
@OrsoBruno Thanks for that, I’ll just wait a few more days (I hope
) when it arrives on factory
Was it implemented? I’m thinking of distrohopping from Arch, but I’d love to keep GNOME 50 if possible.
Please see post #3 above.
Hello and welcome Robert,
I am also waiting for Gnome 50 to be in the official repos. I want to check it out and am planning to do a fresh install once it’s in the official repositories.
If you want to check from time to time (without being on Tumbleweed already) whether it’s already in the official repos you can check here by searching for “gnome-shell”: https://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/oss/x86_64/
It has the current version in the package name. So, 49.4 as of now.
New snapshot releases are announced here: https://lists.opensuse.org/archives/list/factory@lists.opensuse.org/
If you check these announcements you can see if gnome got an update in the latest snapshot. The snapshot concept is a bit different from the Arch release behaviour.
On a sidenote and a bit offtopic:
As somebody who also switched from Arch to Tumbleweed a couple years ago: I am definitely not regretting it. With a pretty well functioning automated testing (openqa) in place, Tumbleweed tends to be less maintenance heavy than Arch for me. Less tinkering and manual intervention required for the price of not being as bleeding edge as Arch. It has been perfectly stable for me since I use it.
One thing that is a bit different from Arch is the multimedia support. Either you rely on Packman as non-official repository (https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Installing_codecs_from_Packman_repositories) or if possible for your usecase you can use flatpaks.
Soon™ it’ll be released… I guess?
