I’m trying to set my brother’s dv-6000 laptop (2GB, dual intel processor) to
run Linux and I’ve run into a show-stopper: his main uses of this thing are
email, some net browing, and Flight Simulator. The latter is a must and
the only way I’ve been able to install it is in a virtual machine. After
some issues with the @#$%^ program’s demands for specific resolutions it
then turns around and refuse to run - it complains that it is unable to
operate the machines video adapter! The program is Flight Simulator X
Deluxe Edition and th laptop meets all the required specs (as does the XP
version loaded in the VM) which are XP SP2/256mb, DirectX 9 - all
reasonable.
I see three viable options:
Find a way to install under Wine. So far, that’s a non-starter.
Figure a way around the video adapter issue - any suggestions?
Write it off, put XP on the laptop and ship it back to him.
Anybody have any suggestions before I exercise option 3? I’d hate to admit
defeat at this point.

Or XPlane, though the requirements are a bit higher for that, but it’s an
outstanding sim.
(No connection to it myself other than being a satisfied customer)

Thanks, guys. I hadn’t looked at replacement aps so I guess that’s the next
step. I rarely play games but I’ve got something like 6000 hours military
jet plus a bunch of light civilian type hours so maybe I should try these.
BTW, if anyone reading this is a pilot that still doesn’t have one of the
new license cards, you need to apply for a replacement license before 31
March. Just ran across this little goody today. Shout if you need a URL
for the online application and I’ll dig it out.

In case anyone is looking, it’s marked “known NOT to work” on the Codeweaver
website ;-(
Heya Will…FSX is too much right now for an XP virtual machine…why not dual boot it for him…when he wants the sim, boot into XP just for that…do a minimal partition.
I’m going to check out FlightGear myself I’m not a pilot, but I do have some student hours flying a sailplane…quit that when I found out it had NO MOTOR !! rotfl!

i need that URL (i guess you are speaking of FAA, or?)…had no
idea…(haven’t flown in years, but would like to keep a valid ticket)

i think there is a 4th:
Set him up with a dual boot to a small XP partition to run the game,
and in grub label it as “Game System”

LOL. Yep, those things are uncomfortable with no fan up front to keep you
cool.

Now all I need is the ticket - found the log books, Jepsen stuff, nav.
computer (CPU 29A circular slide rule type) but damned if I can find the
paper. I’m also having a problem convincing SWMBO that 70 yo. boys need to
be wandering around the sky…

After installing the game (2 DVD’s, over an hour to install and won’t run
until you have an internet connection to validate it), “small” gets to be
relative. Damn! Last time I ran FS it came on a couple of floppies!
thanks for that…yesterday i figured i should try to help
myself…and, wandered around faa.gov until i found that very
page…and, ordered a fancy new plastic card, for $2…
you probably do, but i’m not positive you must have your old
ticket…that is, it might be possible to pull your ticket number
from their DB…try entering with full name; the last address you gave
them (my last was from '82, heh); and whatever else they ask
for…they are tied in with other DBs (i used my passport number to
authenticate)…
if not you will probably have to find a live person in an office
somewhere to smile to…
6k huh, twice what i logged…mine was mostly IP/EP practically no
CP…only flew the pond once…Fort Worth to Guam non-stop (almost 18
hours), 3 A/Rs in buff…
last time i remember seeing my whiz-wheel i was using it on a road
trip to calculate something…don’t remember what…maybe ETA…
i’m a LOT younger than you…about 52k hours younger…
Will Honea wrote:

only time i tried it was in '92, in DOS 5 on a 486/4mb…maybe that
was as late as early '93…since then i’ve always called it a game,
which riles those who demand it is not a game, it is a “Flight
Simulator”…
i can’t see the point of any of those ‘simulator’ games…clearly
aimed at wannabees…

Just to give that perspective, I went through pilot training when we were
the only base with the brand new T-38 - everyone else was still in the
T-33. Some of the Buffs were only 5-6 years old at the time - not even
broken in yet.
I gave up on FS. Gave him my old XP since I couldn’t get the HP Vista
restore CD to work. I figure that was, in toto, a plus.

The later ones are fairly good, especially for keeping up on instrument
procedures. I think my last real WX approach was 10-12 years back into
Teeterboro (at night in a snow storm) but old habits die hard and I’d like
to think I am somewhat prepared if I get caught.
I agree that they are basically games but I did notice that there is an FAA
certified version of X-Plane availible. Not sure if that means you could
log the simulator time but it does lend some credibility to the game.

all the T-33s were completely out of the training command when i got
to Del Rio in early '69…on graduation i was assigned right back
there as a T-38 IP…lots of fun…then to B-52s…and, some T-39 time
while mostly flying a desk in Omaha (HQ)…then Buffs at Abilene until
the B-1 came…after that nothing but staff weenie…flying was more
fun but staff work more rewarding…
