Already updated? What do you think of 11.4

Well I was going to leave it a while but I tried it on my Desktop and was happy enough to upgrade another 3 including laptop here.

The only problem I encountered was one reporting a conflict between noveau and vesa drivers but nomodeset and then installing the nvidia drivers resolved it.

I’ve been a bit grumpy the last few times over things that were working getting broken, etc. but this time I have to say I’m really impressed! Congrats to all involved!

pre 11.x versions always “just worked” and the few minor issues were easy to fix. all 11.x versions have been a total waste of my time trying to listen to internet radio. Amarok sucks now, banshee and rhythmbox internittent at best. i finally can get amarok to play from station websites but amarok is not even close to an itunes or winamp.
i used to tell friends about suse when it was 10.3, now i tell them to use anything but opoensuse. maybe someday it will be a professional grade desktop again.
sorry, but that is my experience in the last couple of years. suse was king but now just barely a contender. too many issues while just install and work at first boot.

It is looking like, if I was able to update my poll choice from terrible I would.
It appear that I had a bad ISO burn to disk. Working pretty good right.

Thanks. Hadn’t bothered checking again when that was written but the last update seems to fixed the problems. Watched 2 old DVDs last night. Even Totem is working. Next up is samba but it’s the bewitching hour.

Have not upgraded yet, as KDE 4.6 has a rather big show stopper for me, and that is that 3g internet via usb dongles does not work at all, and i use this when i am on the road. will wait till next version

firestomper412 I have actually started using the network manager plasmoid again as it seems to have been improved in the 11.3 unstable version 4.6.41 packages. But I just use a basic cdma usb stick. I’ll probably switch back to modem manager since it connects from non kde desktops too. But didn’t want everyone thinking the kde network manager plasmoid was all busted. I know those are sposed to be pre release 4.7 packages but…

11.4 overall is good, but there are some problems i couldn’t trace fully in other forum’s threads.

My system is a Dell laptop Precision 2300 with nVidia Quadro FX 360M: i opted for openSUSE 11.4 32bit, proprietary drivers (updated to release 260.19.44), KDE 4.6.00.

There are problems with desktop effects (in particular flip switch for windows swotching): sometimes all gets frozen and desktop effects get autodisabled after a minute or so (surely there’s something related to nVidia drivers).
I have a problem in dolphin if I transfer a file within Dolphin using the fish protocol: all perfect for small files, at the end of the transfer dolphin hangs if the file is big, i.e. openSUSE iso (with 11.3 the same transfer between the same computers, just reverse direction, is slower but succesfull).
There’s also something in the printer configuration (yast graphical tool): it’s impossibile to change any option (such as duplex) in the advanced tuning of any printer driver and i think there are less drivers than in the 11.3 … is it?

…so waiting for an update … anyone else with the same (minor) problems?

I only had problems configuring my DSL connection, because YaST asked me for “linux-atm-lib”… but after installing it from the 11.3 packages (just like it was suggesteed in some thread) I have no problems with internet.
Everything looks fine. All hardware detected, KDE 4.6 works just great and I think it is faster than 11.3

Thanks to all developers!

@acez: Have you tried changing print option via the CUPS interface? Via your browser, enter this URL

http://localhost:631/printers

Select printer concerned, then ‘Administration’ > ‘Set Default Options’…

I’m at “so far, so good”, moving from 11.3 to 11.4 on a several year-old lenovo (dual-core 2ghz, 2 gig RAM.)

Good:

  • I’m loving the new KDE. Excellent decision to go with that & stay with the newest.
  • Also, it seems like everything is faster.
  • Audio, graphics, wireless all go in cleaner & “just work” vs. mucking about. (I’m particularly happy about improvements to the broadcom wireless driver install.)
  • I think some of the speed gain is EXT4. Glad to be able to go to that.
  • Repository selection and contents is much better. This is getting straightened out the point that it’s no longer arcane.
  • Network Manager improvements rock.
  • LibreOffice & Firefox are both good choices. They are certainly stable enough to use.
  • Online update is working better, plus better results from the repository improvements.

So-so:

  • Install was having some issues with doing an upgrade. I ended up falling back to a fresh install. (Images on a large external drive are a beautiful thing.)
  • Legacy NVidia support is a bit sketchy.
  • Layering in Compiz looks a tad daunting. I’m missing my wobbly windows and desktop cube, which is not yet part of regular KDE.
  • Some of my add-ons went missing.

Bad:

  • Where the heck is “eyes?” Living without little eyes in the corner tracking my cursor is just wrong.
  • Printer support is a bit of a mangle. The problem is expectations. Since it found drivers & etc. I’m expecting it to work.

Regarding printing, deano_ferrari gave the right advice: thanks! You solved my problems about printers.

Regarding wobbly windows and desktop cube, IMHO, “Configure Desktop” –> “Desktop Effects” –> enable “desktop effects” –> “effect for window switching” (the second to be set “desktop cube animation”) and “all effects” tab (enable “wobbly windows” setting the desired “wobbliness”) is sufficient and good enough.
Or maybe i’m missing the point?

Bye, bye.

This is 99% related to the graphics card/drivers combo. Have You tried the latest stable proprietary drivers from nVidia site ? Have You tried the 64bit openSUSE because I’ve heard it’s less problematic with nVidia drivers. Last but not least You could try just sticking with the opensource nvidia drivers that come with openSUSE default install.

The only nVidia graphics card I posses is GeForce2 Ti / MX400 but the computer is to slow to run openSUSE 11.2 KDE so I run Xfce + opensource drivers without desktop effects on that and it works like charm.

Best regards,
Greg

I agree with you glistwan, surely it’s nVidia related.
I’m completing migration and tuning now, later I’ll try to improve following your advices (I’m aware of these things).

Opensource drivers should block/disable kde desktop effetcts (if I’m not wrong, or at least so was in the past) and some “bells and whistle” is appealing …, that’s why I stick around proprietary. 64bit disappointed me in the past: I’ know that a lot of people use it and are fine with it, (I, myself, used it from 11.0 through 11.3 since tha hardware is always the same) but I found that “overall” 32bit was less buggy/problematic (last year I switched from 64bit to 32bit and …sadly… was impressed, so at least for 11.3 my opinion is that 32bit is better). Of course 11.4 is not 11.3 and things get changing … but since setting up a pc for work is not the same as seting it up for test (there are a lot of things that need time and time), i’ll remain a little bit “conservative”.
Manual install of a newer nvdia driver will be surely one of the first things on my “to-do” list.

TNX a lot! Bye!

Yep I use 32bit version myself but got intel graphics on board so usually I don’t need to tweak anything as the proper drivers are installed by default and work great except that they wern’t working fine in 11.3 but they are flawless in 11.2 and 11.4

Best regards,
Greg

Don’t know what happened to eyes but hitting the control key should produce little circles around the mouse current position. If not it’s a configuration setting for the mouse.

It’s been okay. But Firefox keeps on asking for Security Exceptions. Wine seems to be either non-existent or just doesn’t want to work. VLC doesn’t play any talking audio(?). Chrome says “The profile appears to be in use by process 20447 on host linux-safp.site. If you are sure that no other processes are using this profile, delete the file /home/ingvar/.config/google-chrome/SingletonLock and restart Google Chrome.”.

It didn’t want to update at first. So I had to install the system from scratch. Which was slightly annoying.

But otherwise. Not bad. Not bad at all.

I’ve applied either an ‘update’ or new installation to 4 PC’s and one laptop so far. Most have had problems:

  1. Home PC has what seems to be a common issue with on-board Intel graphics. Finally fixed it by running a ‘new installation’, ‘update’ seems to be a problem.

  2. Home PC and Home Laptop both still have WiFi problem via my IPCop Firewall. Despite both being set to DHCP I have to define the default gateway (ie. IPCOP’s IP address) otherwise I get no WAN access.

  3. One office PC worked OK but the odd image was missing. Discovered that Nvidia drivers had not loaded. Once loaded, images are there but graphics are now sloooowww!

  4. Another office PC had HP printer issues. Finally fixed this by searching for a newer version of HPLIPS.

  5. Third office PC WORKS OK, no problems!

The product is great and having converted from Windows some years ago Linux is so much better. However, my own conclusion with regard to 11.4, is, resist upgrading when a new version of openSuSE is launched (maybe for at least 3 months, until some of the critical issues are fixed), unless you are an experienced, knowledgeable user.

Somewhat new Linux user here, and new to openSUSE. Ive done a hard disk install using the 11.4 Gnome LiveCD, after quickly testing for hardware compatibility. Install was very easy, and everything seems to work well.

My computer specs are:

Dual Boot: Windows XP SP3, OpenSUSE 11.4
Gigabyte GA-G41M-Combo

  • using onboard audio (VIA VT1708S)
  • using onboard ethernet (Atheros AR8151)
Intel E5700 CPU (3.0ghz Dual Core)
    4GB DDR3 1066 RAM
    MSI N210-MD1G/D3 video card
    500GB Segate SATA hard disk
    DVD burner

Im a home/hobby user migrating away from WinXP and the MS way (since 1997). I have a limited understanding of Linux and its differences to the way things are done by MS, but enough to make the transition a little easier for me. Aside from the couple of games I play, I have reached nearly the same level of productivity within openSUSE as I had in XP.

OpenSUSE 11.4 has been a very positive experience for me. Id like to give a huge Thank You to all the developers and contributors.

Hi,

For me, it is the best version to date for my laptop.

I dont know if i fit you topic but here goes: i have tried to upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4 with no luck and after that i have installed 11.4. After the mandatory updates the distribution still was unstable every time i started the tv tuner aplication a.k.a tv time; my salvation was when i have changed from 32 bits to 64 bits and moved to Tumbleweed. Even if drivers are installed manually, i got my tv time program working and yast under tv settings too, without a system freeze or crash. I know im not 100% openSUSE 11.4 but i suspect i`m still close to your subject
