Already updated? What do you think of 11.4

Hey,

I know some folks are already updated to 11.4 and some folks are about to do it. I wonder what do you guys think about 11.4. My vote goes for:

“So far so good”

I have not upgraded it yet. I will upgrade in April on laptop and in May on sever.

Is this “I can’t see much difference between 11.3 and 11.5” a typo?

The upgrade was quick and painless, I have a minor issue or 2, but everything so far runs fine - maybe the least troublesome upgrade I’ve ever done. Not sure I see any real differences to 11.3 (though the one time I booted it did seem faster), but that could be because of my work flow which is pretty much browsing and entertainment.

Entertainment? You must have noticed PulseAudio enabled by default with KDE (not so in 11.3), or maybe it just worked?

Yes.!!! I have two laptops. One is my brother’s laptop and one is mine. In my brother’s laptop I have installed 11.4 and I see that is same with 11.3. Do you mean 11.4?

Very easy update from 11.3 to 11.4. Never had so few issues. Only had to re-install some MSFonts and I am missing the mplayer plugin from Packman, it’s not available yet.

never noticed, audio works but I did notice the controls in Kmix are much more limited then in 11.3, assumed it’s a kmix or alsa bug (not real conversant with Linux audio). Kmix mixer window went from multiple channels (woofer, left, right, etc…) to just a single one, this is do to Pulse? Maybe having an SoundBlaster Audigy helps?

Yes, it definitely is. I couldn’t correct it, since I can’t find any
option to do so. You can regard is as 11.4

Glad it works. KMix has changed and it’s not a bug. Notice the Playback Streams tab as you run applications using sound, they should appear there and you can control each stream’s volume. For additional PulseAudio controls, you can install the package “pavucontrol”. Alsamixer has also changed to displaying single channels for playback and capture. I haven’t had any problems with P/A so far on 11.4 KDE.

Running 11.4 on my laptop. I voted “Its awesome”. Everything is working great
Servers will remain on 11.3 ATM.

Not seeing anything in the Playback Streams tab even running/playing 2 apps simultaneously, it’s empty. Even with pavaudio no streams are shown though left and right channels are. Might be something amiss/missing - running KDE 4.6.1

Might open a diff thread for this but it is working

“pavaudio”? Did you mean “pavucontrol”? Anyway the blank tab sounds odd (even with Flash or local video players?).

Aha, you run non-standard 11.4 (KDE 4.6.1) and for that it’s a bit early days, for most users are just trying 11.4 standard with KDE 4.6.0 (at least that is what I have). A new thread would be better. However, you don’ seem to have a baseline 11.4 to compare it to.

I also run 11.4 in my laptop, and everything works great here too. I
don’t know why but I felt like voting for so far so good. And from the
threads around here, I can see that some folks having some problems, and
then solving them, so I can say that 11.4 is a great success. Thanks
developers

consused:

yea with pavcontrol, sorry

there is a pulseaudo 11.4 kde 4.6.0 thread I’ll start following, but iirc the 4.6.1 behavior is what was in 4.6.0

regards,

The update from 11.3 to 11.4 went flawless. Yes I did re-do my repositories. and Kaffeine downloaded some files, but presently, I’m watching the move Machete in HD. **** Nice. I recommend it to all those Rodriguez fans out there. As for openSUSE, I thank the programmers and all the rest of the rat pack that has helped piece this software together. Congratulations! Enjoy your BRAGGING RIGHTS!!

Master Rod

I voted awesome. Updated from RC1/RC2/factory.

Have kernel: Linux 2.6.37.1-2-desktop x86_64, openSUSE 11.4 (x86_64),
KDE 4.6.1 (4.6.1) “release 398”.

With Kaffeine had to rebuild (as usual) all the playlists for them to work.
Playing single tracks from HDD was no problem.
Watching DVD’s also no problem.

To update some packages from oss had to manually download and install,
oxygen-icon-theme-4.6.1-89.1.noarch.rpm and
oxygen-icon-theme-scalable-4.6.1-89.1.noarch.rpm
from factory. These should have been put in 11.4-oss.

Either way, I think it’s a funny–and suiting–typo!

There are two problem that I am seeing right now:

1: The WiFi did connect the first few times. But there is no icon on the task bar where I can query what is happening, or tell it to switch to a different network. (This is with KDE). I seem to remember that I did see a tiny icon when I booted from the KDE live cd. But I can’t find it after install.

2: With KDE, there was a nice mouse setting in 11.3, where it would automatically disable the touchpad if another mouse (usb mouse) was detected. The setting is still there in 11.4, but it isn’t working. Yast does correctly list both the touchpad and the usb mouse. I tried a new account with no KDE configuration, but I had the same problem there.

The problems might be due to something I am doing. I’ll do some more experimenting tomorrow. For the present, I’ll stay with 11.3 on my main systems.

It’s brilliant
Though many icons were missing for apps in gnome, especially kde apps. But they seemed to appear after some packman packages dragged in some wxwidgets
