Not every time but zypper dup download would slow down to a dozen kb/s in the end of a download session and never complete if my proton vpn connection is active. Only if I turn off vpn and try again, the dl speed becomes normal. But most times vpn doesn’t affect zypper dup.
BTW the urls for opensuse’s repos are all like this: “http://cdn.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/non-oss”.
For the case of Tumbleweed and other rolling releases, it usually pays to wait a few hours – occasionally ½ a day – from the time that the new Snapshot is announced before, the next distribution-upgrade is executed.
- The reason is, the time the mirrored repositories require to synchronise.

this doesn’t really have anything to do with our mirrors. Very likely it’s the VPN which gets abused, so not all 100% of his internet speed can be provided by the VPN. (remember, most people use VPNs for illegal stuff)
There were recently reports of snail-dup when a kernel upgrade was available independent of VPN or whatever and the fact that the last snapshot included kernel 7.2.0 and the OP mentioning “toward the end of the download session” suggests that this is the case here too.
Actually, many companies (industrial) require that, their employees use a company VPN when connecting to company resources when they’re physically not at work on a company site.
- In other words, when they’re either working from home or, travelling on company business.
The same applies to many lawyers when they’re transferring their client’s documents to their country’s courts of justice.
If any of that VPN traffic could be viewed as being illegal, is a moot point …

You do realize that I was talking specifically about VPN providers like ProtonVPN, not VPN technology itself?
this does still not exclude the VPN, maybe Proton is doing some slowdowns, heavy usage of other users etc. There are just too many variables that are outside of the mirrors that I would still say that it’s unlikely the mirror

Yeah I noticed that when I forced close the stalled session it did say ‘kernel 7.20’ file missing but I was confused. If it’s missing why there’s still download speed.
And when I turn off vpn I am sent to a different mirror that has already synced?
zypper tries a few mirrors first and when all those fail (“file missing, trying next mirror”) it resorts to download.opensuse.org, but at that time the d.o.o server might be busy syncing the mirrors…
Maybe the VPN just adds “confusion” as to what region the request is coming from and what mirrors are available in that “fake” region…

Better is a massive understatement, just so you know.
Have you ever experienced geo-blocking, not just for luxuries like YouTube and streaming services, but also for random types of websites providing essential services or information and everything in between?
And I say YouTube is a luxury, but I cannot tell you how many times accessing an essential service/information in my country is tied to proprietary foreign tech/services.
PS: I know you said “apologies” for your statement, but what I said above also needs to be stated to fight against the narrative that VPNs, privacy, and by extension, open source is for criminals. Essentially such narratives are saying, “If it’s not used by the majority, then it’s either not good in quality or straight up illegal.”
Are you a criminal for using openSUSE instead of Ubuntu, Windows or Mac?
You can always create an escape tunnel proxy that you can allow access to via VPN and direct zypper to use that.
I used to setup tinyproxy on openwrt for this purpose and it even defaults to the correct settings.
