ZTE MF668A usb modem

Hi,

I’m not at home and I have problems connecting my laptop.

First I tried a free wifi spot - it only offers http access, of limited
use. I failed to see my web-mail via https. Imap, nntp… impossible.

So I bought an USB modem that connects to a provider via cellular
network, a ZTE MF668A. 1 GB/month limit, so I can’t browse a lot. I’m
using it on Windows because I do not know howto set it up in Linux.

The box does not mention Linux, but the web page of the manufacturer
does - but no link as to how.

I have also seen a thread at ubuntu, but they do not detail a procedure
I can follow.

I have no idea where to start…

(The ISP (yoigo) does have a gadget to connect via wifi instead, but it
was not on sale where I bought it and anyway, it was tied to a contract
of a year+ locked)

I do not know very much about wireless broadband, but I’ll try to help you. When
booted into Linux with the modem plugged in, please post the output of ‘lsusb’.
In the Ubuntu link you posted, the device showed up as USB storage, which means
it needs a modeswitch before it becomes a modem. The above will show what state
your modem is in.

I got a bit further.

If I change in yast from ifup to network manager, the nm-applet (gnome,
oS 11.4) detects the modem and ask for some configuration data. I enter
Spain, the yoigo, then the plan, which I leave at default. If I say not
listed it asks for my APM (access point name), which I don’t know. I
enter my PIN in the appropriate box. With this, the applet attempts to
connect but fails, says “disconnected” but gives no reason at all. I
don’t know if there is a log.

The light in the modem goes from red to blue, which is good.

I have to go out, I will reboot again to Linux when I come back and
check lsusb and dmesg.

I’m posting now from Linux :-)))

When I start gnome session, I get a prompt for the wireless PIN and root’s password, but there is no
connection, although the led goes blue. If I click on nm-applet “yoigo” it… it connects!

I got a connection on interface ppp0!

So, on the second boot it worked, with the device plugged on boot. Wonderful!

I don’t know how it works, though…

Next problem: the IP chaanges each turn. A moment ago I had a 10.x.x.x, now a 188.x.x.x, and the
/etc/hosts file is not updated, which makes my postfix fail to start. I have to manually edit the
file each time. Perhaps I have to script it in the ppp/ip-up.local script.
