xvidcap not working after update to 11.4

Would anyone know why this program is no longer working? It starts up fine but as soon as I press record it freezes and I have to terminate the program. I’ve tried using some different settings but its always with the same result.

Does anyone know what might have changed from 11.3 to 11.4 to cause these issues?

p.s. Im using the xvidcap package from the packman repository

Does anyone even have any idea? I know its an old program, but I cant use recordmydesktop’s .ogv files and I want to do a video. Would it have anything to do with removing support for HAL?

Yap…
see this: Problem with screen capture

seems that no one knows yet

I wonder if a necessary package was removed during upgrade. The problem is that I checked the dependencies and they all seem to be installed.

I just tested this (xvidcap) on my sandbox PC running a 32-bit openSUSE-11.4 on an LXDE desktop with nVidia FX5200 graphics and the proprietary nvidia driver. This is an OLD pc: an athlon-1100 with 1GB RAM.

It worked for me with DEFAULT settings.

I think if you are going to report this problem you need also to specify more detail, such as your openSUSE desktop, graphic card, graphic driver , … etc… This works for some of us, so there must be a difference between your PC setup and mine that accounts for the different behavior.

Note I did a clean install. Not an update.

good point, and thank you for taking the time to test. Im using

updated opensuse 11.4
kde
64 bit
ati x1250 integrated graphics (using default driver)

I’m using old saved preferences for xvidcap. I would reset the settings but I havent been able to find the configuration folder yet.

@beli0135: Are you using a 64 bit system as well? Im wondering if maybe its a problem for 64 bit systems only.

after doing a new opensuse 11.4 installation, the problem is still there. so either its a 64 bit issue or a missing dependency

Yea… 64bit, clean install, ATI HD56xx, fglrx

install the 32 bit version of xvidcap. its not the ideal solution, but it works

What exactly is not working with xvidcap?
Defaults
All good here
11.4 _64

the application starts up fine. after clicking the record button tho, the whole application freezes and you have to click the close button and then “This program is not responding” -> Terminate application. Everything besides recording works fine

I can’t reproduce that bug on my 32-bit openSUSE-11.4 LXDE on an ancient PC (with nVidia FX5200 and proprietary nVidia driver). Sorry.

Did you try with a different graphic driver ? or with special desktop effects disabled ?

Yes…Desktop effects??

Yea, probably because of desktop effects. Pitty, effects engine of KWin is still immature compared to Compiz. Biggest complaint I have that they are not smooth at all. Besides it, some stuff like video capture does not work.

I take this back. it worked a couple times, but that’s it. I have no clue whats going on at this point. It seems to freeze anytime the window loses focus or from pressing “stop” or just randomly. running it from the terminal doesnt show anything helpful

Dekstop effects are not enabled.

In the morning (UK) I’ll check it on my Box with nvidia drivers, it’s still 11.4 _64, but when I reported earlier it was for my G550 with Intel Graphic. It’ll be interesting to see if my box is different, the wife is on it ATM.

I’m also having problems with xvidcap with 11.4. When I open the application, it won’t let me drag the window to resize it, which it did when using 11.3. Also when I try to record, it freezes and gives me a message that the application failed. I’m running 32-bit, kde, with nvidia GEFORCE 7300SE video card.

Tried on my Box
Works fine

Which video driver ?

As noted, on my 32-bit openSUSE-11.4 LXDE with nvidia FX5200 with the proprietary 173.14.28 nvidia driver, I can resize, drag with window, stop/start the recording, … etc …

I am having the same issue. Running on I7-950, 12GB Memory, openSuSE 11.4 x86_64 using NVidia Proprietary driver, latest in respository for 11.4, for GTX580 Card. Clean Install. xvidcap starts fine, but as soon as the record button is pressed, application becomes unresponsive.
