WiFi always fails to start on boot (cont'd)

(This is a continuation of the discussion under Leap 15.2 at https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/550924-WiFi-always-fails-to-start-on-boot)

I am still struggling with this issue, i.e. Laptop WiFi does not start on a laptop ‘cold’-start. The Login screen is reached and WiFi is off. Even after login, the wireless menu utility is unresponsive to any WiFi selections (Wireless on/off, WLAN selection). However, if I now press the Laptop power on/off button shortly, the system goes into (presumably) hibernation mode. Another press of the on/off button fetches it out of hibernation and (voila) WiFi is on.

It is difficult to believe that this behaviour is due to faulty hardware, as the Wifi functions properly with the above work-around . I can only think that the boot sequence was changed at the time I started this thread, and it hasn’t been corrected since. What information could I provide to show what is happening to settle the matter?

Perhaps it could be a BIOS issue.

What’s the output from:

rfkill

Maybe check the output on boot and again once you get WiFi working.

FWIW, a similar Linux Mint thread (and Wortman Terra Mobile laptop) where it was found that pressing the F11 key was all that was required to enable the wifi…

After cold-start

rfkill
ID TYPE DEVICE SOFT HARD
 0 wlan phy0 unblocked blocked
 1 bluetooth hci0 unblocked unblocked

After exit from hibernation

rfkill

 0 wlan phy0 unblocked unblocked
 1 bluetooth hci0 unblocked unblocked
 2 bluetooth hci1 unblocked unblocked

Ok, and did you try to find a Fn key to unblock (enable) it?

Yes, Alt+F4 has apparently the same effect as the power button, i.e. sends the laptop into hibernation mode and a second Alt+Fn4 recovers from hibernation with WiFi on.

None of the Fn buttons have any effect on WiFi, either directly or with Alt+Fn (except Alt+F4)

No, not referring to Alt+F4.

Specifically does Fn + F11 toggle WiFi activation?

Ups sorry, my bad. :shame: For ‘Alt’ read ‘Fn’ in the previous post. I tried Fxx keys directly and with Fn (not Alt). (But believe me, I tried much else as well, though :).

Nothing in the BIOS configuration regarding function keys and/or WiFi settings?

…and, specifically, Fn+F11 does not toggle WiFi, but Fn+F4 seems to toggle hibernation AND activates WiFi. Once activated, nothing else seems to toggle WiFi. Any suggestions?

Only as per my last post re BIOS.

I can find nothing in BIOS set-up that addresses Function keys or WiFi settings.
