I was just wondering that openSUSE has KDE as default but SLED uses GNOME as default, why?
Hi
There is no default DE in either, you get to choose during the
install
SLED 11 is similar to openSUSE 11.1, I think the change to
the radio button defaulting to KDE was at 11.2(?), hence the difference.
Maybe it will be the same when SLE11 SP1 comes out (maybe this year).

A few of of the reasons in my opinion:
I think Gnome is a little more user friendly, at least for beginners. When a company is selecting an enterprise desktop, they are looking for ease of use and stability, which Gnome may be a little better at in some cases. A lot of business applications for Linux, including Novell’s, utilizes the same toolkit that Gnome uses, so applications maintain a more uniform look. KDE requires a little more memory and slightly better hardware.
For me, KDE works great for my business needs and I run it on all my businesses computers, but I can see how some might prefer Gnome for it’s simple, conservative approach to the desktop.
I think KDE will replace Gnome in SUSE’s enterprise offerings in the next couple of years. The KDE folks really have business users in mind, and once they can show Novell that KDE is business-stable and easy to use, I think KDE gets the job.
Going to move thread as well to chit-chat. nntp users please pick up
there once I post it’s been moved.

Thread has been moved…
There are few areas where KDE is still struggling, for example -
- Knetworkmanager doesn’t connect to WEP wireless network properly
- Kbluetooth does not connect most of the phones
- Fingerprint reader doesn’t work on KDM
and few more
Like stability issues, I have always had stability issues with KDE 4
Hi
So you have tried the SLED11 version of KDE4?

as mentioned, there is no “default DE” in either openSUSE or SLED,
because during install the user may select either, none or others…
true, if the user is installing from a DVD and decides to make no
decision then the default selected radio button in SLED is Gnome
while since (about) openSUSE 11.1 or .2 the default has been KDE4
so, part of the answer to Why question is: both SLED and openSUSE has
always been Gnome, but recently openSUSE decided to change…
the answer to why did openSUSE change is a mystery to me…but
probably has something to do with the general excitement stirred up by
wobbly windows, spinning cubes and their potential effect on Novell’s
bottom line when those become stable enough to useful/salable in the
Enterprise platform…

IIRC, in 11.2, KDE4 is selected by default, but that default selection
can be changed. There was a huge discussion about that on the MLs.

Possibly because the Mono technology is more in tune with GTK than Qt and Mono is one of Novell’s offerings to enterprises.
Also, Gnome is more in line with the other popular Enterprise distributions.
Ummm also doesn’t hurt that the author of
GNOME/Mono works for Novell.
Ummm De lccaca and fried-man
Also of course because their main competitor (Red hat) uses the ugly foot
Yes for those who say there is no default, your wrong, there is indeed a default.
If you don’t take the time to make a different selection and do as most people do when they install something (click next, next, next) the ugly foot is indeed the default.

KDE is the default for openSUSE.
Nat no longer works for Novell afaik. Technically, he’s a pretty sharp
young man. So is Miguel.
There was a time when there was reason why you HAD to go with Gnome.
History is a mess… but worth knowing lest you make bad assumptions
or state things that just aren’t true.

Nat left Novell a few months ago, though.

Yep he sure did didn’t he. I for one am grateful that he did.
I only wish he could have taken gnome, and everything mono with him.

Well, as a GNOME user myself, I’m glad he didn’t.
