Why don't files open in the correct desktop?

When I click on a file in Dolphin in, say, desktop 1, I find it will open
almost anywhere except in that desktop. I think this started when I switched
to KDE4.3 from 3.5. It happens in both openSUSE 11.1 and 11.2. Most
commonly, it occurs with OOo files but by no means exclusively.

Have you set up an activity to which the file is attached?

Don’t see why I have to set up anything. The file, assuming for argument’s
sake it’s a .ods, will be opened with OOo as default. Trouble is that it
won’t be in the same desktop. It seems to me that it generally opens in a
desktop where OOo last opened a file. So I then have to move the OOo window
to the correct desktop. Of course, if I forget to do that and shift to
another desktop to do something else, I’ve no idea where my OOo window is
and have to hunt through the desktops to find it.

Hi
Have you tried moving your ~/.ooo(N) [where (N) is your version]
directory to see if you get the same issue?

I didn’t suggest you had to; I was wondering whether you had created an activity and whether that was the problem. Having not yet created an activity and not yet encountered the problem, it was a hypothesis - presumably now disproved.

Just tried it and also restarted my session to make sure a new file was
created. Opened a file on desktop 1 and the spreadsheet opened on 6. Back to
the drawing-board!

I’ve had exactly this in the beginning of KDE4. I compiled, installed, went back to KDE3 with resulting in this phenomenon.
Have you tried removing /home/CLODDY/.kde4 , where CLODDY is your username ? From what I remember that solved it.
I am aware of the fact that this is a rigorous solution, or not a solution; maybe you can find out which config effects the desktops.
And, are you using compiz? I’ve seen wicked things with compiz and multiple desktops as well. They did not match KDE’s desktops, so some apps, bound to a specific desktop did not show up at all.

Before deleting .kde4, make sure you have a backup if you are using Kontact or Kwallet.
