I have lurked in a few opensuse areas just to see what was happening. Particularly the issues of upgrading to a newer version of opensuse.
The problem with nvidia drivers looks to be one of the most common issues. AMD and nvidia have roughly equal products. Yet nvidia features prominently in the WTF category.
I have always had a preference for AMD products. Mainly because they simply work. I do not have serious performance requirements.
So I wonder: What is so special about nvidia GPUs that so many are willing to accept its ongoing problems?
It is a missunderstanding of many ppl which only have a superficial look on the topic. And it was often enough explained.
The marketshare of Nvidia products in insanely higher than AMD GPUs. At least on the main gaming platforms like Steam. Simply have a look at the Steam hardware statistics. AMD GPUs do not really show up in the statistics.
With a insanely higher marketshare, also more users will report some small issues. That should be logic. And if you only gave and superficial view it might appear for you that Nvidia is problematic which isn’t true. If you have a look at different hardware forums you will find that Nvidia maybe has more driver/kernel issues. But AMD user complain about performance and stability issues. So both products have issues, on different fields.
Never ever. You have fallen for the influencer blabla which regulary try to push substandard hardware. There is not a single AMD GPU on the market which could be a real competitor for the Nvidia GPUs. Have a look at any benchmark.
Even if Nvidia GPUs are more expensive than the AMD GPUs, you get sheer performance and power which you can’t get from products which gets pushed by jobless influencers without any technical knowledge.
All machines here are equipped with Nvidia GPUs. I wouldn’t exchange it against a substandard AMD card ever. The small issues which arise from time to time aren’t difficult with a little bit of basic linux knowledge (the last Nvidia/kernel issue was a real hard issue to be honest).
If i would need to consider to buy a new card, i would first choose Nvidia again and Intel on the second place.
I think Nvidia cards are generally seen as best for Gamers, but have also been used a lot for AI etc. Interesting that Nvidia are planning on entering the PC market with an RTX Spark Chip apparently. I’m no expert but I think it might be similar architecture to ARM chips. Might remove the need for one of their graphic cards perhaps?
@jimbobrae I’ve only every had issues with the one AMD GPU (RX550) I tried, support to do anything serious is limited, likewise hardware support by AMD is also limited.
I’ve been running Nvidia GPU’s on S.u.S.E/SLE/openSUSE since 2005 I’ve been through the run files, patching, Xorg config etc, my preference is still the run file, but am using the rpms on Leap and Tumbleweed without any issues with my Quadro based cards, even the long thread after the move to kernel 7.x series I was unaffected.
I also run Intel ARC GPU’s (A310 and a A380), so don’t count those out either, they work OTB, good support for multimedia. I just pushed the Level Zero Raytracing (libze_intel_gpu_raytracing) for the likes of Blender as well.
If you just wanting some reliable general purpose graphics then look at a entry level ARC board.
Oh I run my cards on PCIe 3.0 and no resizable bar, so performance is down some, but they work fine.
