which kernel ? default or pae

which kernel is more powerful and stable ? i’m using opensuse 11.2 default now on my asus f3sr. i always wonder what is the differences between default and pae ? which version should i use ?

PAE stands for “Physical address extension”. This allows 32-bit x86 processors to access RAM above 4GB, up to 64GB.

Other than that, there is no difference (that I’m aware of) between the default and PAE kernel. If you have 4GB or more of RAM, you should run with the PAE kernel. Otherwise, stick with the default.

thank you for your reply. i was thinkink that pae is more powerful. seems i was wrong.

Addition: this only applies to 32bit systems !!! And I would install it by default. If RAM is extended to 3gb+ you won’t have to install an other kernel to get it working. The PAE kernel does no harm to < 3gb systems.
