webcam - xps 9730

btw: dmesg | grep uvc
6.620252] uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.50 device Integrated_Webcam_HD (0bda:58f4)

Probleem is inmiddels verholpen, door booten, nadat ik een modprobe had uitgevoerd.

I hardly use the webcam, but in these Coronoa-times, I started again. Problem appeared again. Tried everything, but to no avail.

Maybe maybe - but what do i know - it has to do with that uvcview isn’t properly supported? when I check the software on Opensuse, he just offers uvcview options for SLE.

the strange thing is: after a reboot i can use the webcam as long as he doesn’ t freeze. he freezes as soon as i move my screen of after a very short while. after that moment he isnt’t recognized any more.

there is no /dev/video0

“GUVCVIEW: version 2.0.6 ERROR opening V4L interface : No such file or directory”

any suggestions?

Vreend, als ik het doe. Bijna de zelfde melding maar de webcam application werkt prima.
Welke applicatie ik ook gebruik Kamoso, Kamerka of cheese.
Hier schiet je dus ook geen moer mee op met mij.

Sorry, I do not exactly know what you mean with “he freezes as soon as i move my screen of after a very short while”

Is /dev/video0 present before this happens and gone after it happened?

If so, I would expect dmesg should show something.

In this particular case, the webcam froze as soon as i moved my screen. The difference before and after dmsesg | grep uvcvideo

“uvcvideo: Failed to resubmit video URB (-19)”

After that, after rebooting i just can’t start my webcam anymore.

ls /dev/video0 gives as output:

“can’t get acces to /dev/video: File or directory doesn’t exist”

Sorry, still not completely clear to me “as soon as i moved my screen”

Are you moving the webcam or are you moving your monitor and if so, does the cable between the web cam and the computer move?

As the dmesg error is saying I would double check the USB cable by replacing it.

Sorry for being unclear. I have a Dell xps 13 7930 (2018) laptop, with a build in webcam. There were/are several issues with this particular model. I started with Ubuntu pre-installed. The kernel was patched after some time, the webcam was doing fine. I switched after a year over to OpenSuse (my truelove ;)) had again the problem, solved it (see above), almost never used it, till Corona struck, and theere i had this problem. but after several several several hours of investigating (and I am a noob concerning kernel, en modules) i can’ t find a solution. When i move the screen of my laptop, the cam (via luvcview or guvcview) freezes.

Although i own the black model, it is this one (see beneath). The position of the webcam is low, beneath the screen, in this with model you can see him clearly.

Okay, understood, it is a build in webcam that works when the computers is booted but when you tilt the screen it does no longer work.

That, together with the dmesg errors make me think this is a cabling problem. The cable between the webcam and the processboard has to go through the hinge and on these places cables typically can (partially) break, another possibility is that a connector did come lose.

Your dmesg showed only errors, can you also post the surrounding USB related lines? That could give further clues.

Thank you for paying attention for this issue. I don’t think it has to do with a loose connection or any other hardware problem. As far as I know it is related to Dell <> BIOS <> uvcvideo. But I gathered some info:

the situation before I moved my screen: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1bUCHnR7ck8A-sDb313vqiWlIK_SOAaLR
the situation after I moved my screen: https://drive.google.com/open?id=15EjG_e5Ith1Z1qEDXpZhbuCB1jsQrdjL

It is a hardware problem in a sense that the webcam is disappearing from the USB bus (left before, right after):

http://pix.toile-libre.org/upload/original/1586072579.png

The only way it could be a “BIOS” problem is that there is some switch that can switch of the Webcam and that is activated.

When I remove an USB device (a Bluetooth dongle) I get:

1404.641836] usb 2-11: USB disconnect, device number 7
1409.568600] usb 2-12: USB disconnect, device number 9

I think you will see similar messages in your log, would be good to see them all.

Can you:

  1. start the computer, check that the webcam is working
  2. start “dmesg --follow” and hit two time enter (so the start is clear)
  3. tilt the screen until the webcam is no longer working
  4. copy whatever dmesg was outputting after the two enters
  5. Copy that output between two
tags in a response to this thread?

I 've booted the laptop twice, but to no effect, I will try later on the day. In the meantime, again thank you for your support.

This time, after booting it was different in this way that de cam instantly froze. (but i dupdated). And maybe I should add, that as in this case incidentaly uvcview-qt5 finds 4 integrated webcams.

Good you posted the complete dmesg also with but at the end there is

and that does not work. Not sure what kind of Wiki dialect this is but also the end should have a plain

Filtering out only the USB connect and disconnect messages you see:

 230.045563] usb 1-5: new high-speed USB device number 7 using xhci_hcd
249.261168] usb 1-5: USB disconnect, device number 7
 249.637682] usb 1-5: new high-speed USB device number 8 using xhci_hcd

291.916809] usb 1-5: USB disconnect, device number 9
 292.333711] usb 1-5: new high-speed USB device number 10 using xhci_hcd

So on 230 seconds the Webcam is found, then 9 seconds late the USB device disappears and half a second later it is found again. After 3 seconds it disappears and comes back again after half a second and so on. The device number increasing is indicating the a new device is seen although the system (later) does see the new device has the same ID’s.

That is really the problem, very likely there is no driver problem, the uvcvideo is just complaining it can not find the device

Not sure if you get more useful information out of it, but you can get USB tracedata.

Still my guess is that this is hardware related, it could be that the driver enabled the webcam and more current is drawn and because of a somewhat lose cable the resistance of the cable is too high causing a voltage drop. Because of that voltage drop the device disconnects on the USB bus.

It is really a theory, no proof, maybe other have better theories.

Marel, thank you very much. Pity the problem ain’t solved. Mayby you’re right. I will check the tracedata.

Ok, last entry, unless you see something interesting, Marel. Two differences: 1. the webcam didn’t freeze instantly; 2. it froze, when i tilted the whole laptop (not the screen) cautiously.
