I’m looking somewhere for the hosting of small websites which use php, mysql. I supposes the sites will have a maximum capacity of some MB (~10-20MB) without too much traffic.
It will be used mostly for personal websites and site of acquaintances and friends.
Thanks felbre for your response. Do you know in what things should I be careful enough? I mean what kind of features should the hosting have or what kind of standards in my research should I have? Should I notice for example the administrator panel, or the version of the mysql server and so on?
I don’t really understand your question. What is your project about? Why don’t you just give it a try? I think that there are not many hosters with free php/mysql. Multimania is the only one I know to be exactly.
I’m really sorry…I didn’t notice that it’s for free. I will give a try. Thanks for the information
I have already set up my own server, actually in slackware, which I use it for testing things but I think it’s much better to host sites somewhere else. The procedures that they follow are much more automated and I suppose that there are more credible. I thinks also that many hosters have more advanced control panels in order to do your job more quickly and reliable. I already knew about DynDNS and I had used it in the past.
when you are willing to spend money for your project, you could be more specific about the requirements. How many domains do you need? How much money do you want to spend per month? Would you be interested in a root server as well?
The ads with Multimania can be really annoying and confusing (telling you about viruses and stuff). But with the Adblock Plus plug-in in Firefox I don’t get to see them at all.
After all I only know about the German market. Which country do you live in?
I live in Greece. I’m looking actually to host some sites, which although I don’t want to have ads. I have seen similar sites for free hosting in the past in other countries but I didn’t use them because the ads are really annoying.
I don’t want a server only to test things. I have my own for these reasons. I want actually to “through away” the burden of backups, maintenance etc. That’s why I was asking for a hosters. I suppose for small sites a capacity of 1GB is quite enough and as I have seen many hosters offer an unlimited amount of subdomains and some other features.
I don’t have a problem in which country this will be. I’m just trying to find out the costs, the credibility of the service etc. and I wanted the opinion of persons who are more experienced.
I must admit that I am not that experienced with hosting issues. But Strato and 1&1 are very common here in Germany. There might be smaler hosters as well.
As far as I know, Strato’s headquarter is located in Berlin and 1&1 in Karlsruhe (both Germany). But they might have branches in UK I don’t know about.
