Want to remove some boot entries

I have an ASUS motherboard running a UEFI bios. I have been using it for many years and tried out many distros along the way. After my latest fiasco I was forced to reinstall my OSes. But I have hit a funny problem:

When I insert the USB and go into my BIOS to select the USB as the boot device, the BIOS freezes.

As far as I can tell, there are 8 boot devices available. Adding the USB makes the number 9, which I am theorizing causes the freeze.
Since 7 of these entries don’t work, is there any way, using efibootmgr or something else, that would make these entries disappear?

@featherfoot Should be able to delete entries in the BIOS? If not efibootmgr -b NNNN -B NNNN to remove…

With a less than ideal UEFI BIOS, malcolmlewis’s recommendation employed may not persist. If the defunct ESP directories remain on the filesystem, they would need to be removed manually. The same problem may occur if there remains unused raw disk space formerly used by an ESP deleted from partition table which space hasn’t been wiped.

The problem was solved. Using efibootmgr to delete entries did not work. I eventually found a method to delete entries in the advanced settings of the BIOS.
