How do i install this?
I can’t understand nothing of YaST.
First you need to ensure you have subscribed to the packman repository (this has the codec you want). To do this:
- Open YaST
- Under Software, select Software Repositories
- When it loads, check to see if you have a repository named “Packman Repository”
- If you do, skip down to the portion to add the package, if not, continue here to add the repository
- Click add in the bottom left
- Select Community Repositories, then click next
- Select the “Packman Repository” from the list, then click OK
- It should add the repository, if it prompts you to accept a key, accept it. When it finishes, you should be back at the original Software Repositories screen with the Packman Repository now in your list. Click Finish.
Now that you have added the Packman repository, you can install the w32codecs package. To do this:
- Open YaST
- Select Software Management from the Software section
- When it loads, search for ‘w32’
- Select the w32codecs-all
Note: I would also suggest that you install the mplayerplug-in (will require you have mplayer installed, or will install it for you). This plugin allows you to play video’s from your firefox browser.
- Click accept, it will prompt you with any additional prerequisite packages needed (accept them also).
Let it install everything. When it finishes you should be good to go for your videos. I like MPlayer myself and it works with this method, I actually installed this all while typing this up. If you use a different media player, you may need to install additional packages (like the libxine one) or just have it recompile the media player itself so it grabs the plugins.
This was my major problem.
Thank you very much.
I install mplayer by downloading rpm from the internet (coz i can not find mplayer package from yast whilst searching mplayer). Now I encounter a problem. The problem is that I do not know the installation folder for codec. Is there any way to find out codec folder so that I can install new codec? or in what way I can install new codec?

you didn’t say, but i guess you use version 11.0?
perhaps you can find a smoother way (than downloading rpms…that is,
it is mostly hands off automatic to flush out a system with all that
is required) just by adding the right repositories to YaST and
holding your breath until it is finished…
i’d start over, here: http://tinyurl.com/5eldd2
before 11.0 we had to get our hand’s dirty and follow steps like at
“Hacking openSUSE 10.3” at
http://www.softwareinreview.com/linux_optimizations/hacking_opensuse_10.3.html
(and, there was/is a similar for 10.2, 10.1 etc etc etc…but, now it
is SO automatic that the author stopped the series)…
