VLC - OGV format .. plays audio without video??

VLC plays only the audio track from OGV files … no video … screen in black.

I have played my OGV files with VLC forever it seems, without issue. Today?? No video! Two days ago all was fine. Only thing that i would have done to the system in between is accept system updates.

I have done # zypper dup --from 3 [packman repo] with ‘nothing to do’ as the result.

Dragon Player has no issue playing the OGV files.

Any ideas??

didn’t ogv die a few years back if I’m not wrong it use to use the theora video codec https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theora which in turn was based on an old On2 vp3 codec and has been superseded by google’s vp9?
the thing is ogv is just a container if it was theora or vpx video vlc from OSS would play it but ogv might have a h264 or h264 even XviD video so open that file with mediainfo

to make sure it actually uses an open video compression format which the restricted version of vlc can play
or better uet add the packman repo and do a full vendor change to install the restricted/patented media codecs

using mediainfo is another way to make sure your file does have a video track as ogm might be audio only?

Thanks @I_A … before i follow your suggestions however … here is some additional info.

On reflection i realized that during the last few days the nVidia driver had been included in updates … so out of interest i rolled back my system to an image taken 5 days ago, before the nVidia driver update … and VLC works as it has always done wrt ogv files … no issue.

So then i did ‘zypper up’ to bring the system up to date … with the following interesting output:

the nvidia driver does influence hardware acceleration but nvidia never supported theora video decoding
try mediainfo and see what’s what
both Firefox and Chromium natively support ogm files with theora video compression try opening those files in a web browser

my mistake the name of those libraries is libtheora0 and libvpx1 (I don’t get the 0 and 1 in those names but …)

I just remembered an older thread a user was having issues playing video on 42.2 after a disk upgrade from 42.1 the reason was there wore some 42.1 packages that didn’t get upgraded and the miss match caused his vlc to break
if that is an upgraded system not a clean install check if maybe an old package is causing issues

rpm -qa --queryformat "%{Name}:%{Distribution}
" | grep -F "42.1"

do that if you upgraded from 42.1 if you did from an earlier 13.x in the above command replace 42.1 with 13

I’ve had the same issue with vlc and nvidia driver 384.69-25: no video anymore. Rolling back to 384.59-50 fixes the problem. Just found another sulotion here: https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/no-video-output-in-vlc-mplayer-xine-worked-before-4175613805/

I’m guessing this has something to do with nvidia’s hardware acceleration (VDPAU)
what video driver did you have (G04 or G03 not the version numbers) and how did you install it the hard or the easy way?
