I have followed your tutorial on my opensuse 11.2.
I still get the same error in the log.
So, i have considered the kernel-source.
Indeed: The kernel-source I have installed doesn’t match my linux kernel:
uname -r: 2.6.31.5-0.1-default
Kernel source: 2.6.31.14-01.1
what shall i do to make it match?
As indicated in the log, I have run oldconfig && make prepare in the directory /usr/src/linux
but an error still remains.
Could you help me further?
//*********** LOG - begin **************
Makefile:162: Warning: using /usr/src/linux as the source directory of your Linux kernel. If this is not correct, specify KERN_DIR=<directory> and run Make again.
Makefile:170: *** Error: /usr/src/linux (version 2.6.31.14-0.1-default) does not match the current kernel (version 2.6.31.5-0.1-default). Stop.
Go into Yast find the kernel-source entry below click the version tab the newer version should be there. If not you need to find the source repo for your installed kernel if it did not come from the standard repos.
Thank you a lot for your help !
Thank your advice, I could eventually install winxp as vbox :

The installation of XP using the boot-CD was successfull.
but after the installation, as i restarted my xp-virtualbox, I got an hanging black screen…
>>Typically such OEM CD’s do not work in Virtual Box.
But I could boot on this CD and install XP untill I got “installation finished, you can restart…”.
The problem came as I restarted my xp-vbox.
Reinstall windows
Looks to me like something got ‘Jeffed’ at the end of the installation.
As a matter of habit, I always shutown rather than re-boot when in a VM
It’s probably12 months since I installed XP in Virtual Box and I don’t recall it finishing the install and then requesting a reboot. But then I was using a proper install CD, I know it does reboot at some points/s and is generally a pain the butt.
So it looks like Virtual box is working properly, I just suspect you need to try again with the XP install.
As I say, if you try a linux install, you can get the feel of it and be sure it’s OK
FYI: Also I always create a .iso of my XP Cd rather than use the actual CD, just seems to work quicker.
And I always use a Fixed size disk for the VM!
If you install Windows from a CD you got from the manufacture of a PC then it is set up to use the drivers for that hardware. ie it is a restore disk. You need a real Windows disk. You can often get a generic OEM disk if you buy a little hardware also. Or a box set.
I have installed Opensuse 11.3 as vbox and i can start and use it. Satisfaction Thanks !
So, my xp vbox-installation probably doesn t work beacause og my “OEM- XP installation CD”.
Does anyone know how to make it possible with an “OEM-XP installation” CD or where I can find a vbox compatible XP installation CD ?
Am I forced to use an XP Retail version CD?
