I am using Tumbleweed v20211209 /KDE. Up to now I if I needed a USB stick I just plugged it in and it just worked. Last time it was about one to two weeks ago - not any more now. The command dmesg shows:
[19838.678704] scsi host2: usb-storage 2-2:1.0
[19839.710422] scsi 2:0:0:0: Direct-Access Specific STORAGE DEVICE 0009 PQ: 0 ANSI: 6
[19839.711124] sd 2:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg1 type 0
[19839.712677] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] 61440000 512-byte logical blocks: (31.5 GB/29.3 GiB)
[19839.713286] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Write Protect is off
[19839.713296] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Mode Sense: 23 00 00 00
[19839.713691] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Write cache: disabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA
[19839.717128] sdb: sdb1
[19839.718851] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
So the USB stickj sdb1 is detected but it does not show up in Dolphin and I cannot access it. I checked /etc/fstab"
uli@linux-4skc:~> cat /etc/fstab

Should there not be an automount option? I can of course manually mount the driv as root:
**linux-4skc:~ #** mount /dev/sdb1 -t vfat /mnt
But why does it not automount?

My normal TW experience is that, when I plug in a USB drive:
the system tray Disks & Drives item becomes active
I can use the system tray item to “mount and open” the drive.
And then a dolphin window for the drive appears.
In my experience, a drive doesn’t automount for desktop use, I have to go through the above steps.
(I can confirm that similar dmesg output occurs on my desktop.)

thanks mchnz, I was not clear
You are right normally the system tray Icon with the USB device comes up and gives the option “Mount and open” or so. No nothing comes up now any more. WHen I select “Disk and Devices” on the system tray I get the message “no removable devices attached” even though the USB’s LED lights up. That’s why I checked with dmesg where it is visible. But I can only mount it as root with the mount command which means for example I have no access as normal user to copy across.

Thanks for the clarification.
The only thing I can think of to check is if it’s just this one drive, or any drive?
Normally I would look beyond dmesg to the journal, perhaps follow the journal while plugging in the drive.
For reference, here is what I see in the journal when I plug in a USB stick:

Of course I have tried different USB sticks and it is all the same. I have further tried Settings > System Settings > Removable Storage > Removable Devices to tick the box “enable automatic mounting of removable media” but it made no difference so I unticked it again.
Weather I use dmesg or journalctl - I see that the computer recognizes the USB as sdb1 but it does not tell me why there is no recognition in the GUI to mount the drive. Many years ago we used to have a line in /etc/fstab to mount removable devices but I don’t know if this is still required.

Is it the same for all users? You could create a new user and test if it works.
So there are no interesting journalctl messages? My journal shows that org.kde.kded.smart gets activated. If I search for ‘smart’ in Settings > System Settings it winds up in Device Actions > Open with File Manager, which appears to run kde-open5 “%f”.
All out of ideas at this point.

I don’t get the multipath error, but I’m not sure that’s an issue. I did google the error, and did find a reference to these forums from June which also concerned a similar/same issue:
https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/556030-Problems-mounting-USB-stick/page3
It might be worth trying some of the suggestions there. If those suggestions were applicable, trying with a new/different user should have worked, so if you’ve already tried that, I’m betting the other thread won’t help.
I also note you’re not seeing the Successfully activated service ‘org.kde.kded.smart’ message, issues around that might be worth searching for.

**linux-4skc:~ #** udiskctl monitor
If 'udiskctl' is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this:
cnf udiskctl

It should have been “udisksctl monitor”. Do you have udisks2 installed?

Check “journalctl -b -u dbus.service” for errors. Command is “udisksctl monitor”.

deano_ferrari I have not installed udisks2 hence no udisks command. I tried to install it now but I have removed and locked all lmv2 packages to avoid my computer hanging for minutes during shutdown. Now I cannot install udisk2 without removing the lock on [FONT=arial]libbd_lvm2. Is there any other command which gives the required results?

OK I restarted the computer (after all when installing udisks2 it ran drawcut) and now the USB is working as it did before. here is the udisks command:
**linux-4skc:~ #** udisksctl monitor
Monitoring the udisks daemon. Press Ctrl+C to exit.
**18:23:31.935:** The udisks-daemon is running (name-owner :1.23).
A big thank you to all who helped
