Upgrading the i3-4130 resulted in broken desktops. One of the graphical logins works normally. The other five including a new one suffer from flicker and everything being touched turning into black. Dragging a window leaves black areas behind. Clicking the application starter opens a black window. Some unknown magic has one login working reliably and properly. Any idea?
A bug was filed for this. I tried a number of things but had to roll back.
Thanks for fast response. I tried Gnome and it worked well.
I also had the flickering. Here’s my Graphics info:
Graphics: Device-1: NVIDIA G92 [GeForce 9800 GT] driver: nouveau v: kernel
Display: x11 server: X.org 1.20.3 driver: nouveau unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa resolution: <xdpyinfo missing>
OpenGL: renderer: NV92 v: 3.3 Mesa 18.3.1
Even though the screen was flickering, I managed to go into KDE System Settings → then Display and Monitor → then disabled “Compositor on startup”. Don’t forget to apply when done. This stopped the flickering.
BTW - My laptop with Intel Graphics had no problem at all.
“Then I would suggest you do what Peter Suetterlin and Felix Miata
suggested to me the other day, when I had a similar problem: I simply
uninstalled xf86-video-intel package and rebooted.”
The package isn’t needed, but can cause trouble. Removal and rebooting fixed the problem. Graphics are:

Thanks this fixes the issue for me too. Removing xf86-video-intel
had a minor effect on one application but not really a problem.
Wayland not surprisingly didn’t have the issue and works great but I still need some features of X so can’t just switch to it as I’d like to.
It’s been a couple days, but, I finally looked on the TW machine and I did not have xf86-video-intel installed. I guess I’ll just keep the compositor turned off until the next Mesa upgrade. I was hoping the going solution would work for me, but, oh well.
I know if I install the Proprietary Nvidia driver I can also get the flickering to stop, because this has worked in the past, but, I hate using it on TW.
Thanks for the advice
I have a laptop with nvidia graphics. Removing xf86-video-nouveau fixed the problem.
