Upgrade leap 15.6 to 16 question

I’m using leap 15.6 with KDE. Is there an option to choose a different desktop ( like gnome) for the upgrade to 16 or does it only use whatever you currently have?

the Upgrade will use the installed Desktop(s).

So you can install in openSUSE different desktops at same time and use them maybe with different Users at same time, because of the Software running in User Context such as pulseaudio

It upgrades the packages you have (well it can of course add new dependencies of those). It does not spontaneous add new packages (being some desktop stack or not).

So when you need further software now (being a desktop or not), add it now and let it be upgraded when you upgrade to 16.0. When you only need it later then your upgrade to 16.0, then first do the upgrade when it becomes available and then add the new packages.

You can install the Gnome Desktop with what you already have but it can lead to some competitive behaviour
In my experience it’s usually better to stick with one or the other
YMMV

ok I’ll stick with what I have

I strongly suggest to install opensuse-migration-tool and use that. Leap 16 comes with ( a.o. repo ) changes, the script takes care of that. I’ve tested it for upgrading 15.6 → 16.0 both in VM and on bare metal. It did the job fine.

To be clear - are you asking for a way to “migrate user settings | preferences from KDE to gnome” ??

If that’s true, “good luck” is the answer (my personal opinion).

Your best option for this situation is to simply -start from scratch- and install Leap 16 with gnome as a fresh install (alongside your current KDE install or wipe it away, though I’d keep a /home backup). Then make whatever DE (gnome) alterations you want, then install all your [required] software and manually migrate all your login accounts as needed.

Here’s what one person did, but I’m confident none of their DE settings and accounts were migrated properly:

I have no idea why one would do it this way. A lot of work with no guarantee.

@1chip Here’s what you do with zero risk:

  • Install the GNOME pattern(s) from Myrlyn / YaST Software
  • Select the KDE patterns in ditto, mark them for uninstall, and execute
  • Change the display-manager to gdm.
  • logout and login on GNOME

After this you can use the migration tool to do the upgrade to 16.0
