upgrade from 10.1 to 10.3

 hello friends, just to ask to you experts, what is the most painless way to upgrade from 10.1 to 10.3? It will be done in a Gateway Laptop. Yes I kno everybody is upgrading to 11.0 but it happens that I will be using software that works with 10.3 only. Take care you all.

Definitely using the 10.3 DVD. While it’s possible you may have a fair number of software dependencies to resolve (obviously this highly depends on how much/what software you already have), where you will encounter the most significant changes is in the different kernel. In particular there were changes that could affect the device-names (hd<x>) changed to sd<x> for hard disks) and the move to libata as a common core module for all SATA/IDE disks. The DVD will help you navigate through this, which you would not see at all just doing a straight software upgrade from the repositories.
