Updater applet (apper, gnome-packagekit...) running while doing other internet activities

I always have had this uneasiness:
While updater applet (apper in KDE, gnome-packagekit in GNOME, whatever is called in XFCE) is running I always have to halt ALL internet activity (checking webmail, logging in work websites, irssi, etc, whatever) out of fear for being attacked or exposing any sensible data…

After all, the applets run as privileged user, don’t they?
Doesn’t it make me vulnerable?

And also, what is it called in XFCE?
