Uninstall 12.2?

I have a Windows 7 machine and recently installed Opensuse 12.2. I have several problems that I can’t seem to resolve and I now want the install gone from my system. I cannot find any way to uninstall an Opensuse installation and I don’t want to just delete the partitions on my external drive because then the dreaded Grub will remain. My MBR has been destroyed and I can no longer get into Windows without my external hard drive being connected. I have tried Boot Loader and selecting the option to boot from the MBR, and that hasn’t worked. I tried a windows System Repair disc and it found no errors on the MBR, yet I cannot get into Windows without going through Grub and my external hard drive being connected.

In addition, OpenSuse seems to have trouble with my network cards, both wireless and wired, where sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. Now it appears that it is not and nothing I do gets an internet connection any longer including disconnecting and reconnecting the ethernet cable or turning the wifi on and off.

This is a debacle and I just want it gone. Do I have any options at this point short of a reinstall of Windows? FYI, I do have a system image, but I don’t know if that will fix the MBR.

Best wishes.

Well at least now I can boot into windows, but my mbr has been corrupted permanently. I have an HP with System Recovery partitions that now do not work from boot up. The only way I can use the System Recovery option now is with a System Recovery CD. The partitions are there, but they are now unusable.

Unless it’s physically damaged, no, it hasn’t been permanently
corrupted. Just a question of getting the additional boot option to work.

You might ask HP how to recover their boot sector properly.

The installation of openSUSE and OS for that matter is a serious undertaking. You have to take responsibility for what you tell or allow an installer to do.

Even if you let the installer do all the partitioning for you - it would not damage your recovery partitions or the windows installation.

The typical removal of openSUSE or any Linux distro is (assuming you have a windows install DVD and possibly Parted Magic)

  1. Boot to windows if that is possible and delete the partitions related to Linux and recover the space back to it’s original position
  2. Boot the windows DVD and repair the MBR
  3. Reboot and you should see windows start (if not you may need to use Parted Magic to set the boot flag on windows boot partition - this may be other than the partition referred to as C)

I know this because I have done it more times than I could possibly remember.

(ps: typical removal - but not the only method and or tips and tricks)

We’ll I appreciate all the help, however, Ubuntu installs are much easier especially their wubi installer that allows you to install it through windows and not affect the mbr. It runs well and let’s you see how linux is progressing. It is close to being a windos replacement for me, but theire are glitches that prevent it from being so yet.

That being said, I cannot contact HP support as the installation of Linux immediately voids the warranty. So they don’t need to know, do they? So it’s my problem to work out. And at this point, I’ll just have to accept that I can’t access my recovery partition any longer until I reinstall windows again from the recovery cd’s. Because I’ve tried all the mbr fixes and can boot into windows without problem I don’t want to mess with it any longer.

You can install openSUSE in a way that doesn’t affect the MBR as well.

You’re making an assumption that because they say it voids the warranty
they won’t help you. I’d bet that they would probably provide you with
some level of assistance regardless of what the warranty says.

It never hurts to ask - and often when you do, the answer will surprise
you.
