Unable to mount NFS shares after update

Hello All

I’ve been searching the Googles as well as this forum, and so far I have not been able to locate a resolution to my problem.
My NFS shares are not mounting. They were mounted, then I did an update… and they stopped. I rebooted the system, no change.

When attempting to mount from a terminal I get the following:

user@suse-desktop:~> sudo mount -a

So I did some basic trouble shooting that I am familiar with:

What did you update?
What repos do you use?

One suggestion: instead of sudo, do “su -”, enter the password, and then
issue those commands.

I have this:

Telcontar:~ # l /var/run/rpc*
-rw-r--r-- 1 statd nogroup 5 Aug 23 13:59 /var/run/rpc.statd.pid
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 Aug 21 07:45 /var/run/rpcbind.lock
srw-rw-rw- 1 root root 0 Aug 21 07:45 /var/run/rpcbind.sock=
Telcontar:~ #

The first one is apparently missing in your case. Is it?

The second program is not covered by sudo, so it gets access denied. And
anyway, they are pre-systemd and probably useless.

Hello

Thanks for the response.

I did a zypper dup as per all previous updates. I did not make a note as to what was updated, but there was quite a bit as my desktop had been offline for the last three weeks.
Here is a list of the repos I use:

And when I get my /var/run location:

suse-desktop:/var/run # ls -l | grep rpc
-rw-r--r-- 1 statd nogroup 0 Sep 1 22:33 rpc.statd.pid

So obviously something is wrong, and I’m not sure what the issue is.

Why a zypper dup instead of a zypper up? Who knows w hat happenedd now :frowning:

No real reason… I’ve always done zypper dup and never had a problem.

Anyone have any thoughts as to why my NFS shares have stopped working?

Is there any way to pull a log of the most recent updates?

Thanks again!

Do you realy think that proves something!
OK, I will quit from this thread, not realy my bussiness

Another google search lead me to checking /var/log/messages, and within that I find :

I’ve tried a couple of things that I found when searching the above error message, but none of them worked.

Well, now you have. :frowning:

> Anyone have any thoughts as to why my NFS shares have stopped working?

Nope.

What you have installed is unpredictable.

The problem with an unconfined dup is that it takes the most recent
version from any repository, even if incompatible.

> Is there any way to pull a log of the most recent updates?

Kind of…

“/var/log/zypp/history”.

Or “rpm -qa --last” (from memory).

If I were you, I would go back and undo the updates to a “plain distro”
version. If you are interested in the procedure, I’ll explain. There are
two methods: use the installation DVD to do an “upgrade” to the same
version. Or, remove all repos except oss, non-oss, and update, and then
do a distribution upgrade (dup). After that, never use dup again.

Mind you, we have no proof that your dup operation is the culprit, but
it can be, and there is no way to disprove it either - save to find why
rpc does not work.

Is there anyway to attach a text file? I have a list of the items that were updated, but it’s rather large.

I’m in the process of doing a roll back to a ‘plain distro’ and will advise when completed.

Thanks again!

The best way to share lengthy data is via SUSE Paste

adjust the ‘Delete After’ period to something sensible, and post back here with the URL it generates.

Ok… so I’ve done as was suggested and did removed all but the three listed repos and did a zypper dup…

still unable to mount the NFS shares with the same errors as I indicated before.

head banging against the wall

To clarify.

You have as active repos only these:

oss
non-oss
updates
updates-non-oss

and they are all for 12.3 - please verify the URLs, not only the names.
Check the output of “zypper lr --details”.

And then you did a zypper dup, with no incidents. Yet you get the same
problem with NFS?

Yes, I’m also banging my head. :frowning:

Once I have this sorted out, there are some repos that will need to be re-enabled such as nvidia and wine.

After the updates, I rebooted… and attempted to remount the shares. Keep getting the same errors as before.
Is there a way to purge and re-install everything pertaining to NFS and rpcbind?

Thanks again!

As long as you don’t use an unconfined dup, should be OK.

You already did - that was the point of the procedure, to make sure the
entire stack was back to defaults.

I’ll have another look at your post tomorrow. It is 3:20 here and I
don’t feel too bright. Besides, I’m not at home, this laptop runs 11.4,
can’t check things.

In the output I see

mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified

and I see in the fstab that you don’t have the default, like in a working example from my laptop:

10.11.12.100:/disk/BBC-Videos /Extra/BBCvids nfs defaults 0 0

Did you try removing/commenting the NFS shares in the fstab, then readding them through Yast - Networkservices - NFS client?
What does /etc/exports from the server side look like?

From what I remember some functions/options of NFS have been deprecated

Another thing:
openSUSE has switched to systemd as a replacement for sysvinit. If you want to restart all services needed by the nfs client, do

systemctl restart nfs.service

To get the status (plus hints to what’s wrong) do:

systemctl status nfs.service

To give an impression, here’s the output I get:

nfs.service - LSB: NFS client services
          Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/nfs)

This is what is in the two export folders:

Ubuntu Server:

/export/storage 192.168.1.0/24(rw,sync,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash)
/export/backup 192.168.1.0/24(rw,sync,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash)

FreeNAS:

/mnt/storage/media -alldirs -network 192.168.1.1/24

I tried adding them through YaST, and the two shares on the Ubuntu server are now mounting. The FreeNAS folder is not. I even tried changing it from 192.168.1.1/24 to match the Ubuntu share, and no change. I still get an error:

So I checked my Ubuntu server which also mounts the FreeNAS share, and this is how I have it entered:

# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
# / was on /dev/sdb1 during installation
UUID=8aa1c77c-d0cd-4617-8e87-19a5fbe6fb16 /               xfs     defaults        0       1

And this is how my fstab currently looks:

*192.168.1.122:/mnt/storage/media /mnt/media nfs defaults 0 0 ***

The /mnt/storage/media option is the one that does not work. I have two XBMC machines and a laptop that are also able to mount the FreeNAS box without issue.
Any other thoughts?

Thanks again!

Hello again!

I’ve still not been able to get my FreeNAS share to mount, yet everything else in the house has no problems with it.
My openSUSE 12.3 desktop used to be able to connect… and now keeps returning an error, as outlined in my previous posts.

Anyone have any further thoughts or ideas?

Thanks again!
