Turning my desktop to a dual purpose workstation & Server

Hi Everyone,

This is a multi-point question, and I am happy to pay or donate for the communities’ time.
I am also happy to move to Suse Enterprise desktop if recommended

I am at the point where I will need to look at networking as I am expanding my company & will need to work away from my desk, while being able to access all files on demand.

I am running Opensuse Tumbleweed on my MacPro Annihilator desktop, and on my Asus Laptop, both running GNOME desktop environments. I also have and will keep using Lenovo Tablets & Motorola phones, both Android.

Firstly, is it recommended I use Suse Enterprise Desktop, or do I keep using Opensuse, and what is recommended for the Desktop - Tumbleweed, Leap, etc?
Baring in mind, I want to use it as for both Workstation & Server (including running Steam & multimedia Servers to point to the TVs in the apartment

Next, do I keep using Tumbleweed on my Laptop?

Next, How do I integrate my phone & Tablet to work with the Desktop/Server?

Lastly, How do I pay, donate, support, contribute to Oktoberfest celebrations, etc.? (Steins don’t come cheap)

Thank you in advance;
Michael

About tumbleweed/SLE:

OpenSuse Leap/SLE is probably the safer and less maintenance prone solution for a professional setting, but if hardware support is only available for Tumbleweed that is usually fine too (I am on tumbleweed on my work computer for 3 yrs now).

File access:
Your work desktop has to be exposed to the internet or you have to have a third server exposed to the internet. The server can be as minimal as a raspberry pi. For file access from other linux machines I use sshfs. If your desktop is behind a firewall, you would have to establish an ssh connection to the third server with a reverse proxy connection.

Ssh is not an option under android. I use a nextcloud docker instance to access files from android in a dropbox-like fashing (a certain folder is shared and synced across devices). Setting this is up is much more involved than the simple ssh access and a server of at least a celeron-type processor is recommended (which could be your desktop).

Often file access is even unwanted on Android, rather desktop access. I have used guacomole (again a docker based solution) for this which allows VNC access to your desktop from any browser. Again, this requires some effort to set up.

Hi
Thank you for getting in touch regarding this answer.

I should have mentioned, the desktop is running AMD Ryzen 7 5700G. So I dare say it can handle what is needed for this configuration.

If possible, I would rather keep everything on the desktop.

I always like to pay my way, especially when it comes to anything business related. I tried to get in touch with Suse for SLE without any success - so Leap it is.

Thank you for your support so far. Creating an ISO for Leap as we speak.

I apologise for going off topic, I am going to ask if there is anything special I need to do after installing Leap?
