I have got around to installing Leap 16 on new UEFI PC. Number of things are very different from 15.6. Mainly YAST is gone and Myrlyn replaces part of it. I need help in following:
a) How to add Packman repo? Essentials required for codecs for Amarok. Is Zypper command the only method now.
b) I have to mount two partitions where I store my work. In Leap 15.6 I added two folders under root, changed permissions as required and via partioner mounted these to those folders. I have not been able to find the partitioner as yet.
c)Eekboard is probably in Packman repo. Not in Discover app. Required for Hindi and Marathi.
Thanks hui. May be there is a problem in my downloaded Myrlyn but the screen brought up by add repos does not show list of community repos! I went the Zypper way.
I am missing the options in YAST!
How do I add additional languages specifically Marathi and Hindi?
Partitioner to set up mount points? Was the one in 15.6 GParted?
Bootloader adjustments?
Exploring and locating features takes lots of time.
Cockpit is a web “console” designed for Servers. The tools, as far as I understand, for various tasks have to be on the target machine itself. I am working a desktop. If the tools are already there I should be able to reach these directly.
By the way is it possible to install YAST on top of the present set up? Will it work?
Of course they are. Most of them will be simply edits of configuration files. It does not matter if a GUI tool does the edit or you does it manually in the CLI. And hen there are tools like fdisk, mkfs, mount, useradd, etc.,etc.
@PrakashC Nope, Cockpit is a local tool as well… I use the flatpak version on my main desktop and connect over ssh to my local machine and others on the network. https://en.opensuse.org/Main:Cockpit
No, not possible to install YaST, it is possible to use the ncurses version of some modules via yast
I tried installing Cockpit via Discover as well as Myrlyn. It wont install because of dependencies, cockpit-system that cannot be provided!!
Again I (signed in as root) am unable to reach / (root) and see the various folders therein. As I mentioned earlier I create two folders under root, change the user and permissions for these, and mount my data partitions through the partitioner. KDE partitioner is available in Discover and I could use it but not able to access / is a hurdle.
I have another reason to reach / for the fonts folder. The Inscript files for Hindi and Marathi require correction for two alphabets. Filing a bug report has not resolved the issue for years now. It is easier for me to correct the files.
My shift to UEFI on new hardware (i3 12100 on MSI B760m and as earlier dual booting with separate SSDs for Windows and Linux) has not been smooth in respect of Windows too. Earlier with Leap 15.6 and Windows 10 (Legacy BIOS) I could copy from and paste to files to Windows disk when working in Leap. Now this fails. Is it Leap or Windows blocking?
Regarding Cockpit, to install it two options are given in Myrlyn:
a) deinstall busybox-hostname-…
b) break cockpit by ignoring some of its dependencies
zypper will offer the same solutions. How do I decide which one is OK. I am not a geek just a user learning a little bit here and there.
Re fonts, if I change in /home these wont be available as root! Not that I would require these as root.
Still I have to solve my problem in mounting the data partitions.
Installed Cockpit with de-install busybox-hostname option, both Discover and Myrlyn show it as installed, BUT it does not come up in the applications menu or its search.
I have been away from my PC for quite some time. I had managed to install(?) Cockpit but was unable to run it. Could not reach localhost:9090 only! The external link in Wiki to documentation leads to stuff for server(s) administration. I need something more suited to standalone PC.
