Tumbleweed installer freezes at 90% when using FIDO

I’ve had OpenSUSE Tumbleweed installed before on this computer, using the same ISO as now. As long as I don’t set FIDO2 for the FDE, it will install without issues.

Here are key settings to reproduce the issue:

  • Set Language and Keyboard layout
  • Set up internet connection (I used wifi)
  • Add Main Update, OSS and NON-OSS repositories
  • Choose KDE Plasma
  • Guided setup:
    • Remove even when not needed (all partitions)
    • Enable LVM
    • Enable Disk Encryption
    • Add password and choose FIDO2 authentication
    • Btrfs with Snapshots for Root LVM
    • Separate Swap but not a separate home (home also causes the installation to freeze, irrelevant of the authentication method)
  • Choose time server
  • Create user
  • Install

Hardware:

  • Lenovo Thinkpad X13 Yoga Gen 1 20SX
  • Intel i5 10210U
  • 16GB RAM

It will always freeze at 90%. Pushing esc does nothing so I can’t provide an output. No buttons are clickable, though the cursor still moves (doesn’t tick but one can move it across the screen). I’ve left the installation for over 2 hours, thinking maybe it was just slow but still nothing.

Anyone know why this happens?

No, not an idea what is causing this hang, and yes, not easy to debug.

As an install without FIDO2 for the FDE works you could do that an install FIDO2 for the FDE afterwards.

Will give that a go. Something I just thought of: The X13 has a smartcard reader in it, so maybe that is causing some issues. I’m going to try on different hardware as well, to see if it’s the installer or the hardware which I need to investigate.
