I have a new Lenovo X1 carbon gen 11 that had win11 on and i have formatted and installed Tumbleweed. I have used the TPM2+pin security, full encryption on a btrfs + snapshot file system, booting from systemd not Grub2. its an i7 intel with integrated graphics.
All worked well then suddenly after a reboot i get a black screen with the last firefox window still open and functioning. There is no other visible desktop. I can open the console so its editable but everything i have found online doesnt seem to fit this and focus on nvidia drivers. Any ideas out there?
Do you have Nvidia GPU?
i do not have an nvidia gpu
Do you still have a taskbar?
What does right click into the desktop? Does it bring up a menu? Maybe only your wallpaper is gone.
no taskbar but i can right click and open settings and also ctrl+T for console
I tried adding a panel but if it did its not visible
There might be a corruption of your user profile duu to filesystem or drive issues.
Do you have the same issues/effects with a fresh user profile? You may need to use Cockpit or YaST or useradd to create a fresh user.
sorry just added that to my las reply, i tried but if it has, its not visible
yes new usr has full gui. how do i un-corrupt my profile?
Ok well that diddnt last long three reboots later and back to a black screen. I have reinstalled tumbleweed three times twice with different media on different usb drives. there is something broken in the systemd boot or SDDM and the gpu driver.
one thing that is very noticeable is that on my desktop and my old laptop both running tumbleweed with Grub2 the sddm screen is the smae on startup or wakeup but this systemd boot has completly different sddm screens, on startup its colour at 4k resolution and on wakeup its the same as on my grub2 machines, but black and white & much lower res.
I beleive I have resolved the issue with the following systemd boot kernel flags:
i915.enable_psr=0 i915.enable_fbc=0
This didn’t fix it immediately but subsequent zypper updates included some with i915 in the name. then switching between two accounts, one with the black screen and one without, the black screen was no more. I cant prove this was the cure but its working now.
