trying to install RAR

why you may ask? because Ark is not doing what i like it to do. rar is very stable. will at less it is to me. but i don’t know how to install it the right way. hear the link I’m trying to download rar. WinRAR archiver, a powerful tool to process RAR and ZIP files. if you can i like English WinRAR and RAR 3.71 for Linux

try to make this a easy step by step download. I’m steel new to linux. I just started at July 5,2008. I’m using openSUSE 11.0 KDE 4.0.

PS: don’t try to change my mind about getting KDE 3.5. even if I’m going to learn the hard way. i think it better to learn the hard way. imo you learn more this way.

If you just want to unpack RAR archives, you can install unrar, it’s in the OpenSUSE repos.

I’m guessing it in YaST. if so were do i go from there? i have YaST open:o

Good luck.

made the search. but i had no luck at all finding it. or i just have bad eyes:(

i have another idea. can the download be done in the Console?:smiley:

.rar is not supported in suse 11 YET so…
Dude. To use winrar you will first need to make sure ‘wine’ is installed.
Pick up winrar from filehippo.com
Wine is a Linux app, and is in Yast - software management.

Save the winrar.exe to your desktop or other easy place

Now open a terminal and cd to the location of the winrar.exe, eg:

cd /home/xxxx/Desktop
(xxxx)= your user name, change as needed

Now in the terminal type:
wine ./Setup.exe (Setup.exe is just an example, you need to type the exact name of the winrar .exe file)

That should install winrar for you.

Hi
It’s in the pacman repository, unrar is in the standard install.

Thread moved to Applications

Wine failed to install:(
this is what it said, insert
‘openSUSE-DVD 11.0 (Disc 1)’

       URL
       cd:///?devices=/dev/sr0
Failed to mount cd:///?devices=/dev/sr0 on /var/adm /mount/AP_0x00000001: Mounting media failed

do i really need a cd/dvd to install:confused::confused::confused:

No - so long as you have an active internet connection
Go to Yast - Software Repositories
Disable the DVD
Make sure
oss and non-oss are both enabled and refresh auto
Finish

Now go back to Yast - Software Management and install wine

sorry I’m a noob. how do i disable DVD?:p;)

YaST > Software Repos > Disable DVD

An update on the .rar issue which doesn’t seem to work properly in kde4.

I had installed winrar myself under wine and it works fine. But then I just tried something else, as I have kde3 also installed, still working from kde4 though, I used the kde3 ark and it works fine, though you have to choose open with - there is not extract to on right click, as there is in the kde3 desktop.

Like kenyap said - you can use unrar to unpack .rar archives.

You need to add the packman repository in yast.

Go to software > software repositories > Add > Community Repositories > Packman

then go to Software > Software Management and do a search for unrar

Try to figure out some way to use rar and unrar. Why
install Wine just to use WinRar? That extra layer (Wine) between you and your project is just going to
mess with things. My 2 cents…

I’m not a big fan of the DVD being listed as a repo. I’d like YaST to intelligently turn the DVD repo on or off based on whether or not there is an internet connection.

I’d also really like to see rar, 7z and ace support out of the box.
