Triple Boot (Windows8+Ubuntu+OpenSUSE12.3)

Hai all,

Am new to here and this is my first post.Actually am eagerly waiting for the release of Open SUSE 12.3.Currently am using windows 8 and Ubuntu together.now my boot loader is grub2 provided by ubuntu.I have unalloted space for suse in my hard disk.it’s not for fun,but for gain knowledge i want to install suse along with my current OS’s.
Is that adding one more OS will make problem for my curret boot loader?
I want to list all my OS together in boot menu.
How to do that?

*sorry for my bad english

When installing openSUSE make sure it uses the free space you have allowed for it (I think this is the default anyway).
With the ubuntu boot loader being grub2, your system would be using ‘legacy BIOS’ so openSUSE will also use grub2 by default.
The openSUSE boot loader will give the options to boot windows, ubuntu and openSUSE, there should be no issues with that.

Triple Boot (Windows8+Ubuntu+OpenSUSE12.3)

I missed the ‘8’ after windows, windows8 machines use UEFI, are you using grub2 or grub2efi as the boot loader with Ubuntu?
There are potential complications here, but much work has been done to improve the situation with openSUSE 12.3.

Not necessary.

There are potential complications here

I dare to say UEFI makes it simpler and removes complications.

As I understand it win8 can use ‘legacy BIOS’ as well as UEFI, which is why I asked for confirmation as to weather grub2 or grub2efi was being used.

Perhaps not complications as much as confusion?

You won’t loose your default OS with a bootloader issue!
At worst a few minutes of time to reinstall/repair the windows boot loader or the fix grub to get to get ubuntu going again.

You should not have a problem, If you do (and I would not expect you to), post back here and we can help you get your main OS running in minimal time.

I don’t think anyone will give you a 100% guarantee that there can be no issues.

If you are still paranoid, you could wait for a few weeks after the release 12.3 before installing and see if others have the issues you are concerned about…

One more point, If your main OS is windows I assume you already have a windows install or recovery disk that can be used for basic windows recovery, if not you should get one, you should do this even if windows was the only OS on the machine.

If your main OS is ubuntu or any other Linux OS The tools needed for recovery are freely available, and in this case, on your install disk.

I know that it won’t loose my Default OS.My aim is to get all the three OS in a single boot menu.and now the ubuntu boot loader is Grub2 v1.99.
I dont know which loader and version is used by suse.if it is lower than current version,it may create some problem.otherwise i will wait till the release and let you know the status

As I have previously mentioned, and now that you have confirmed that grub2 is being used by your other Linux distro, your machine is using ‘legasy BIOS’ and openSUSE will, by default install the grub2 boot loader and your other OS’s will be available at the boot loader screen.

You have expressed a need to ensure that your ‘main OS’ remains bootable, take the precaution I mentioned in my last post, you should do this even if you don’t multiboot.
