Unix is doomed!
Chaos feared after Unix time-zone database is nuked • The Register
The Register seems to have changed their headline since I first saw that.
It’s good for a laugh, while we ignore the predictions of doom.
However, something does need to be done about copyright trolls.

The trolls will not vanish. There is an indication that they will grow
in numbers in the future.
As far as i understood its a company that makes astronomy software and
has a right to the alleged code that measures time.
From a view of an bystander with no knowledge about law, its silly
really. But i assume it makes business sense.

the “funny” thing is, that this company is not doing astronomy software, they do astrology software. So all this stuff, psychics use, or what…
They have bought the rights to a book, which is the base for the timezone database, mainly for historical data before 1991. This is the reason why they have sued. I mean: WTF? These data are facts. The time and timezones do not change just because someone writes a book about it. On facts you can not have a copyright.
All this is so ridiculous. Unbelievable. I dream of a time when all these trolls will be forced to give up their crazy business. But this day won´t come, I guess…
Quite right.
The data were in the public domain. If the data were not in the public domain, then the public would not have been able to set their clocks to that timezone.
I see this as extortion. Pay up now, or we’ll sue and it will cost you more for legal services than we are demanding.

Well there is a reason why Google bought Motorola. Its about patents.
The more you have, the lesser trouble you have.
Now ok, i was wrong about Astro. Gee, i never liked these fortune
tellers anyway. All bogus.

yes, I also think that the main reason for Google to buy Motorola was the patents. Google has a fight going on against Oracle - there they need ammounition and they also helped HTC in a lawsuit against Apple: they gave HTC some patents as ammo for firing back…
This all is so retarded… its not about competition anymore. Just about holding down the competitors. It is not good. Not good for innovation, not good for the customer…

ICANN has now apparently picked this up and is running with it.
So our *nix systems will still know what time it is.
