Recent updates have moved thunderbird email from 102 to 115. I am finding that 115 is freezing; mostly upon startup for a couple of minutes. No response at all to any clicks. Can’t even close thunderbird. This did not happen using 102 version. No changes of any kind were made to any accounts or connections from 102 settings.
I see no messages on the thunderbird screen about what the problem is or any indications it is trying to do something and can’t. No errors seen when started from a terminal.
Have not posted this to thunderbird site yet as I want to see if any other SUSE users are seeing same thing and whether it is an openSUSEissue.
@tckosvic did you check the thunderbird folder in .cache in your home directory for relevant logs?
If nothing found an option might be to delete thunderbird, delete the cache and reinstall. But bare in mind that you would have to set up your mail accounts again on thunderbird.
Also no, as user settings and profiles are stored in .thunderbird which can/will be reused when reinstalling thunderbird.
Uninstalling an application under linux does not erase user settings and application profiles in the home directory.
I saw nothing about having to reinstall mail accounts. I fact I saw no transition from 102 to 115 until I noticed that 115 was in play after investigating the freeze ups. . Why would the accounts need to have the same information reinstalled?
I didn’t say that you need to setup again your accounts. This was 404. I said that you don’t need to setup anything as long as you don’t delete the .thunderbird directory.
I cleared the history and cache using the thunderbird menu → tools → clear recent history dialogue as i didn’t know what were the relevant cache files and where they were. I’ll give this a whirl and see what occurs. Will report back if freezing is gone or re-occurs.
On Tumbleweed im using the Mozilla repository and the update to Thunderbird 115 went well. No differences in behaviour. Only the changes in UI as announced by Mozilla. And i did go through the settings to adjust them as there where some changes in Thundebird 115.
I’m sorry for bumping, but have you managed to find the culprit? I experience the same kind of freezes, but this happens in multiple OSs, including Windows, and on different hardware as well, so it’s clearly a problem with Thunderbird, but the only solution for me is to disable hardware acceleration in the Thunderbird’s settings. I would prefer to keep it enabled though . I’d never experienced this kind of freezes in the older Thunderbird versions before.
Also, if you do still experience the freezes, can you check the RAM usage of Thunderbird when that happens? For me, it appears that there is some kind of a memory leak, as after being frozen for a couple of hours, Thunderbird ends up using 15 GB of RAM or more, and it seems to just keep growing with time.
